I never thought of how children could misunderstand a sign like that. He saw it as written about the children and not as a warning for drivers.
Congrats for placing third in the contest.

Dear Bill, I saw this particular story because you had won 3rd Place.
This particularly story had a very good title, because it is a matter of perspective between the adult and a child.
I also wanted to thank you for going to all the effort to petition the whole neighborhood so the city would install that sign.

Awesome... the minds of our dear children register the words so differently than those of the adults. Took it to heart being called slow. Nice flash for the contest. Congratulations! Smiles, Carol

Very cute, Bill. I suspect the boys had quite a conversation between themselves. Of course, anyone can be offended if they want to be. Case in point: several decades ago hubby and I visited Salisbury, England. A lovely town. Imagine our laughter when one crosswalk warned drivers "Old people crossing". Not sure if it was reserved for seniors or not, but we crossed there anyway. :D Nancy

Your son must have been very literal as a child - just as my granddaughter is now. We have to be sooo careful when we explain things to her or she is up in the air because she thinks we've crossed some invisible line that makes the statement indefensible. Love your story. Good luck in the contest.

Charming story--great twist. Reminds me of an incident my ex told me--he lived in a town called Reading (pronounced REDing)--there was also a North Reading--he saw the sign No. Reading and started crying that his town had disappeared. Delightful piece!

Haha, out of the mouth of babes, right? I enjoyed your contest entry. I can see your son's POV. Youngsters are so impressionable. Thanks for sharing and the update in notes. Bet wishes.
Respectfully, Jan

I like how this creates the story visually without a lot of unnecessary details. The short dialog between son and father gives the ending a twist with an effective humorous ending.

Thanks Linda--actually hard for me to hold words back, but when the contest only allows 100 words...

You're very welcome! I can relate! Learning how to write flash has taught me not to be wordy. :)

We always comment on this sign too and wonder about the 'slow' children. Signs, when words are missed, often convey a meaning different from the one intended. Best of luck in the contest with your engaging story.

I like you took the initiative to get the sign up... Yet I'm surprised at the ending, that your children consider it as a stupid sign. It happens that children do not appreciate what their parents do for them.
Thanks for sharing this true story.
Happy writing.
