What a great message in this poem and your notes. This isn't the same rabbit hole I went down as a child, lol. Did you show this one to your pastor? I think he'd be pleased with it. Don't worry, I use only the old version of Fan Story.

So many of those artists back then died of drug overdose or like Ricky Nelson and his bunch who blew up their plane in flight free balling.( Whatever that is) I think that's what I read. It was so long ago. Elvis... so many of them. Interesting poem Dean. Well done.:<) Nancy

I graduated from high school in 1972 and went to college. I was from an extremely small Midwest town. My college was small and old fashioned. I knew this stuff existed but it was always someplace else. My family and I were talking a while back about older music and I was shocked at the amount of drug references in the music. Your poem and author's notes, I honestly didn't know.

WOW WOW WOW! This reminds me of an extensive report I did in high school (back in the 1970's) on the use of psychodelic drugs. A local mall had an exhibit of all sorts of drug paraphernalia and the dangers of it.
There is indeed a lot of pressure in the music industry. Even the Christian artist culture is not without it's perils of exposure to the peer pressure especially when they climb higher and higher on the charts or try to crossover into the secular realm.
Thanks for the extensive author's notes. I find they add a lot to a story and appreciate when somenoe adds them!

Great poem with a message, don't get dragged down the rabbit hole. it's interesting how many of these songs I could still hear the melodies to as the lyrics scrolled by on my computer. What's also interesting is how many of them had to resort to hidden meanings and childlike imagery. It showed that at the time those things were unacceptable and taboo. Now, it barely matters what the lyrics are. Society has reached the point where singers openly sing about drugs and it is just accepted as the way things are. Did these old songs lay the foundation for the way things are today, absolutely.
I think each of us has our own choice to make when we look at the rabbit hole. Either dive in, or turn and skip away.
(My writing is twisted enough the way it is. I don't want to imagine some of the stuff I would write if I got high.)

Your poem is exceptional, Dean. Read all of it--start to finish--a fount of information. Naive me had no clue about the meaning of these songs we all grew to love. I'm especially fond of "brown eyed girl" because my gorgeous daughter has brown eyes. It was my good fortune to have walked blindfolded through the 60's. Not sure why, but I missed the entire decade...and never touched a single drug. My drug experienced surfaced when I was in my 40's ... much like my breast size, I was a slow learner. Somehow got through it, survived to tell the tale. Despite missing out on the 60s, I do remember all the songs you listed. Missed the not so subtle meanings behind the titles and lyrics...as I said, I am a slow learner. Great work with this one and it sends a powerful and important message too.

Dean: Great information about the drug culture, the snake is trying to kill, steal and destroy our youth and talented people. We need more Jesus culture music. I like the history and reasons of the music. I never liked Alice in Wonderland for children. Look at the kid cartoons...roadrunner runs, coyote chases and falls down the mountain and dies, peep peep. What are our children seeing and hearing as they grow up in the world? I remember these old songs. We need to fall in love with old time hymns and worship songs, God's way. flylikeaneagle
