This poem broke my heart- it described so well my mother-in-law. , "Why do you call me Grandma?" She thought she was young- her last coherent sentence before never speaking again, and lying in the fetal position was she looked up at my youngest child and said, "Oh, I know who you are- your my beloved grandson!" with the sweetest smile - then her mind went blank. Alzheimer is a dreadful illness. My mother-in-law was a brilliant woman - a school teacher..

Such beautifully written poem about a horrible roblem. I worked as a hair stylist in a nursing home a.couple years ago and it seemed about 90% of the rsidents had alzheimers.
So sad. I'm sorry you had to experience it that way.
Your poetry is a great contender!

This is very powerful writing, Jimi. You've really accentuated the twin curses of loneliness and confusion, and by doing so given insight into what must be a terrifying experience.

Unfortunately I know all about the darkness that is alzheimers and the knock on affects that are far reaching and very destructive, you describe the misty mind of the inflicted very well Jimi. I only hope I don't go the same way as my father, it was heart-breaking to see him lost within himself and a shadow of the man he was.

Hello jlsavell
Your poem about the tragedy of Alzheimers is so well written with such caring a loving emotion especially when you said--

I smile, for I know that she loves me so
But still I am puzzled, for I just don't know
why she says my guests will be here soon
and I will have lunch with them at noon

A poem about the puzzling and sad world of Alzheimer's Disease, family reaching out, the confused stare...

Next, they take a chair and sit beside me
Pull out old photographs for me to see
They're all very nice with faces that smile
But they're just strangers that visit a while

--and now frustration, more confusion
--wonder where family is...

And when they leave, I begin to recall
memories of loved ones, why don't they call?
Perhaps explain to me why I'm here;
for only strangers to bring me good cheer?

An excellent poem that digs into the heart of Alzheimer's.

Cheers!

I wish I had a six for this, it was a powerful work.
So much of that type of dementia is truly not understood.
What happens to a brain and the thought process causing such sudden shifts in a persons life.

You grabbed it all in this piece. Sad and painful losing a brother or anyone to such a disease.
Thank you for sharing your story.

Thank you for having the courage to write and share this poignant poem, along with adding the tragic details in your notes. I hope the creation brought you some solace. I admired your writing the piece in rhymed couplets and quatrains. Your title established the mood and theme powerfully. Your use of the first person and focus on being "puzzled" adds excellent immediacy. -Joan
