I believe this story merits five stars though there are a few minor points I suggest the author consider:
1. I don't (know) why, but it always brought a smile. Add know.
2. to my recollection, (did he ever mention) horses.
3. a show horse judge. Delete of some sort.
Like the insight articulated in the last two paragraph.

This is a terrific entry for the contest, with a very important message we should all remember. It is hard to really "know" someone unless you live in intimate circumstances. And even then we may not know the full person. I made just a couple of bery picky notes about the writing.
