Hahaha! That's funny and cute and hopefully the New Year will find us all healthier (if bored) and, anyway, best of luck in the contest. Evi

Comment from Frank Malley
Poet Marquette writes a funny brief poem about New Year's resolutions. At the center of this topic's theme is a question valid for all resolutions, whenever they are made: what do I lose by this reform to my behavior? Often, more is lost than is acknowledged by the forces that urge the reform upon the sinner. Everyone acknowledges that it's wise to quit smoking, given the medical evidence. And, probably, quit drinking, abandon rich foods, to bed early, and don't watch lewd videos. At some point, the thoughtful self-reformer asks, what's left? Unfortunately, a lot less.
I think the limerick meter is well done although there are a few spots where it could be smoother; and remember, limericks need to move like a song to work their best magic.

Aha, Frank! Some might call this a Christmas Miracle, but I call it just the Wonderful review of a very good friend of mine. We may not always agree, but we certainly do this time. Especially that the metre is off in the second line. At least that is the one that is bothering me. Is it the one that you could see too?? If so, do you have any suggestions that could make line two sound better?
And btw, I do truly appreciate the great review and the six stars. I will treasure them always, especially since I framed them and put them with the two other six star reviews you gave me. (Big Smile) And thanks again Frank!
I truly appreciate it and I appreciate you too. Merry Christmas my Dear Friend!!]

Hi Debi! Merry Xmas! This may be odd, but I think that just putting an exclamation point at the end of line 2 makes the reader inflect the line so it flows better.

It's hard to believe that the old adage 'you have to be cruel to be kind'
somehow holds merit but 'the proof is in the pudding' so it seems.
Well written with a clear message and fun image.
I especially noted the fun last line.
Blessings

I really enjoy humorous poetry and I love to rhyme. This is so true how people year after year make the same resolutions. I am guilty. Well written. Good luck in the contest.

This was such a fun read, it made me laugh. It is a great limerick entry for the contest. I do think that the New Year is an arbitrary concept that many hold on to and it is no different from the previous year if our attitudes and priorities have not changed. Thanks for sharing.

Oh Sherry, you are so right! I must have tried ten times in my life to quit smoking and as long as I thought some magical date helped it along, that was hog wash. (Lol, maybe not that stupid) but until I made a complete attitude adjustment, nothing was going to change. But wouldn't you know that of all years, it was 2020. Omgosh that was not good! Pandemic was a hard one, but I didn't give in and now I am 3 years smoke free! Yay!
Sorry about that long thank you, but I am so happy to be on this side of it.
And thanks for the sweet comments for my poem. Merry Christmas my friend and I wish the best thru the holidays for your family too!
Comment from DeboraDyess
Well, Debi, you made me chuckle out loud. (What would that be - COL?)
I'm glad the 'boring' turned into beneficial, though. That's always a plus. I think you have a winner here. We all recognize the pluses of our resolutions and hope to get them done, so you captured attention right away.
Blessings and best,
Merry Christmas,
Deb

Hi Debora, first of all, I love the spelling of our name. MIne is spelled Debra and since I developed very early in life, the boys would put emphasis on the second half of my name. Haha! So that's why I still like Debi better. Lol!
Thank you so much for your very kind review for my limerick, and I appreciate all your thoughtful words.Thank you so much for your lovely gift of six stars. So kind of you! I think I may have already told you, but worth saying again, Merry Christmas to you and yours! Thanks again my dear friend!

Lol! My daddy just didn't know how to spell 'Deborah'. No one hears that 'h'! He always told me it was to make me special. Then I edited some of his sci-fi stories to earn college tuition (a few thousand years ago) and figured it out... The man couldn't spell two words in a row correctly. lol. Yup - I'm a misspelling! Ha! But that's okay. He was also a misspelling - Allan. And we chose to spell our daughter's name Stefanee. Our granddaughter is Sydnee. We hope she'll eventually choose to have a child and spell its name in a unique and special way, too. :)
Glad you're NOT a misspelling! You and yours have a great Christmas, to.
Hey, I'm posting a submissions page to a print magazine in a few. You ought to check it out. :)
Blessings!

That is the most fun story I have heard in a long time. I hope everyone in your family never spells another name boring like everyone else. Your dad was a genius!!

I will check it out,
most definitely! Can't wait!

They didn't say it needed to be pretty, nor apropos for all readers but what you wrote nailed it well enough to be consider in the running for a win, place or show, and to help assure it, I won't enter.
You do know I'm kidding, right? :-)

I love you and I don't care who knows it! Merry Christmas to you, your lovely wife and beautiful family! And thanks for being such a great friend and keeping me laughing all year! This review was your Best yet! Laughed for ten minutes straight!

You and I might possibly have been the Abbot and Costello, or better yet the Burns and Allen of vaudeville had we lived close enough together. Our humor matches relatively perfectly.

Hahahaha! 🥸🤪

This is a terrific limerick and contest entry.
I love writing wether it is prose or poetry that makes me smile.
I agree with the sentiment expressed. As we get older, it seems there is another thing to get rid of from our diet and/or lifestyle:)
Thanks for this post and have a Merry Christmas and New Year, filled with love, laughter, and health.

I really enjoyed your New Year's poem. We often do give up things, but it hardly ever lasts into the year. Your last line was fabulous! Thank you for sharing, and best wishes to you.
