Ha! Terry, you are something else! This is hysterical. I love reading your work early as it gives my day a happy kick in the nonmotivational ass, lol. Thanks for sharing, it was brilliant! Best, JohnC

LOL, John, I am happy to give the Story of the Month Winner, a kick in the ass! Thank you for reading. Terry.

Very different and the ending took me by surprise - didn't see it coming. It's a thought-provoking piece, even though it also has humour. Many think about scoring points with God. He doesn't test us though, fortunately, and give us points or a ranking He simply recognised the problem, provided a solution, and offered it freely to all who were willing to accept it. Well written and engaging story.

Wendy, thank you for reading and your insightful review. Terry.
Comment from Wayne Fowler
Great concept. I'll bet it'll have readers thinking and wondering all day.
Very well written, too.
A nice final touch might have been for Kevin's wife to have dropped some sort of hint that could be taken either way - "paradise is this way", "Don't forget your book, Paradise Lost", or ...
Best wishes.

Wayne, thank you for reading and your review. I did toy a bit with the ending. I thought maybe having St. Peter and Gabriel talk about what it was like now that Alex showed up, but I decided against it. I like your idea. Terry.

I swear, Terry, you have that rare ability to take an ostensibly silly idea and present it with BOTH humor and serious morality (not to mention MORTALITY) undertones!
Admittedly I love Jeopardy...not nearly as much as when Alex was hosting, but I digress...
(As long as I'm degressing, props to Ken Jenning! Bialik annoys me...)
Where was I!
Phone a friend?
Nope...
Oh!
Right!
I fell hook line and sinker for the ending!
This NDE was a Near Dream Experience!
In case your muse takes a nap here's a prompt for you:
Write a short story about....
(wait for it......)
Strawberry paper Shoes!
Ready?
GO!

That was a "prompt" I was given Freshman year of college ...
By my Speech Professor.
I had to "riff" a five minute speech from that.
(Clearly I never forgot the experience!)

Wow! What a way to have a near death experience. After you change your soiled underwear, you can begin giving thanks that it was a near death experience and not the real thing. The next step is to prepare to live the rest of your life in such that a win is assured.. This was a good fun read.

Terry, you have a quality I would love to have. I swear, you can take any subject and make a dang good story out of it. Your stories are entertaining, and like this one, has subtext that lingers in the mind after the story is over. I'm thinking of Barney, the dog, and the protag's business partner. You are indeed an asset to FanStory.

Oh. Boy, I fell for this one completely. I didn't see that ending coming and yet your story gave me lots to think about. As I read this, I had some flashbacks of my own. Things I know I've been forgiven for, but still they happened. This was the spookiest jeopardy game I ever heard of, yet since Alex died of the same thing my mom did, and she was such a big fan of the show they are maybe playing a Heavenly version right now. And she is saying to him, I always wanted to meet you, but it's not such a big deal now after meeting God! .Lol! This may have been a little spooky, but fun at the same time, and very clever and I loved the ending!

Lol! That's cute! And I liked the mixing up with Jeopardy plus the lifelines. At first, after Jacob was introduced, I wondered if there would be a ghost of Christmas past and future, too. I liked the considerations of scorekeeping in the game of life. Thank the Lord that Jesus won it for us so we don't have to worry about our score staying on the positive side!
