I'm a retired first grade teacher and I happen to dearly love children's poetry. Your writing prompt entry certainly did not disappoint me. It was fun to read, and I can image the children would love to read what the different animals were doing.

Barbara, you then are on my A list as one of the best for your dedication to first graders! My first and third grade teachers were many decades long mentors, to whom I owe so very much! This is my second attempt at a children's poem, the first one I received such bad reviews on was quite uncertain whether to enter another one. But, heck! Why not press on, as it said!

I really loved it even unsure how a squirrel would sigh eating honey, as if it hurt to do so, then climb a tree and crack nuts open with the same tooth. And another thing. Do you snails like sandhills? Whatever. As a child's poem, they wouldn't ask such question, only smile, laugh and cuddle closer. nice job.

my thoughts, create the question, search for answers ... good foundational education we all once enjoyed.

Children are fascinated by animals and would love envisioning this poem. The stories flowed smoothly and was fun to read. This would make a great picture book. My favorite is Bobby, the bobcat. Best wishes in the contest.

I am sure children will enjoy this one. It is lively and flows well. Illustrations will help children identify animals if it is published. They can make appropriate facial expressions to reflect what you have written. Best wishes for your entry.

Comment from Gloria ....
Excellent use of literary devices to bring this children's poem to life.
The honey is very, very sticky, and all the wee animals having some fun with day will be a delight for children of all ages.
Wishing you great luck in the voting booth. :)

I appreciate the good wishes, I have been doing poorly, of late, in this regard.
Comment from Paul McFarland
Nice children's poem. I might suggest that the meter should be cleaned up a bit. That is very important in poems for children. Giving names to the animals was a good idea.

I love this contest entry, and I wish you tremendous luck in the children's poetry contest! My favorite line is, "Stevie decided nuts were better." Stevie seems so matter-of-fact when you state this. Thank you very much for sharing!!!
