Well said friend. This was a good read. We are our worst critics. I am glad my sweetheart saw past my ugly dial and found the person inside dying to be loved and accepted. God Bless.

Such a tender and love-filled tribute to your daughter, Gretchen. I too was a shrinking violet, so afraid to go to dances because I knew I would make a fool of myself. The fact is, if I had loosened up and allowed myself to flower into popularity, my life would have taken an altogether different direction--and I'm not sure I would change the way my life has progressed to get me where I am.
Looking back it was probably the same for you, and God willing, will probably be the same for your daughter. She may be on track for her own destiny just being what she is now.

Yes, I was a nerd. Didn't fit in, but part of that was my own doing. Square peg in a round hole, if you will. Thank you so much for the awesome e review. Gretchen

This short piece is easy to relate to. I feel the same looking back at my younger years. And, I see the doubt and insecurity in my daughter's eyes already. Thanks for sharing this. Chris

There are so many young people who get caught up in all these airbrushed and photo-shopped pictures in advertisements, television, movies, and magazines, believing they can't match up. They can't! and neither can anyone else. I walked to my mailbox one afternoon to get the mail. Lying beside it was a wet piece of paper, so I picked it up. I noticed some penciled writing and opened it to read. Inside, a young girl had written a note, apparently to herself, that spoke of how ugly and fat she was, how could anyone like her, and so on. I stood there crying as I read, a big, tough man with my heart breaking for this child I didn't know. I spent weeks trying to find out who she was so that I could try to get her some help before it was, maybe, too late. I never found out who she was. I still think about this note often, and hope this young lady is past her bad times. It happens to so many. Thanks for your real people post of true life. Great job. :-)

Gretchen, back in '64 when I was entering high school, I was that proverbial wallflower. Always standing in the background because I felt that I wasn't as good looking as others were. I guess I blossomed in that summer when my physical body changed dramatically. I earned a spot on the varsity football team and started coming into my own. I was being noticed more and more by girls my age and older. The main reason for this attention was not only my looks, but, it was my personality. The way I treated everyone. There was one girl that everyone made fun and called her "chicken hawk." I saw the hurt in her eyes as the damage was done. We went out on a few dates until she graduated, as she was a senior and had a car. She left town and I ran into her in the summer of '69. The "chicken hawk" grew into a beautiful woman. I didn't recognize her. We dated that summer and she said that I was her first love because how I treated her.
I truly hope that your daughter realizes just how beautiful she is. That outer beauty isn't always the best, unless that beauty and the inner beauty merges into one. Maybe soon, something will light that bulb inside her youthful head.
Good luck with her Gretchen. I will certainly pray for the both of you. Have a great day.

I thank you on behalf of all the chicken hawks out there. It is rare that someone goes out of their way to make another feel good about themselves. Thank you so much for your wonderful review. Gretchen

Oh, teenage angst! How I miss those days, not. Everyone has to go through it, but it is never easy. I think we can tell them it will get better, but they won't believe it until they blossom. Great piece!
Take care,
Russell

I hope she does, too. My daughters were similar. The older was the cheerleader, honor student, athlete, etc. The younger was just as smart, but found a way to be different, a non-conformist, wearing flannel shirts and doing sit-down protests around the high school flagpole. Turns out they both are wonderful and successful young women, just in different ways. Actually, being yourself is what makes you successful at life. I hope both of your daughters can be a success at being the person they were created to be.

I preach that vanity is bad but not seeing how beautiful you are is just as bad. Thank you for the wonderful review. Gretchen

Hi ya,
OMG I think you have just written a story about me, I was so like that. Please tell your daughter that she is beautiful and when someone falls in love with her it will be for who she is and not some trinket that looks good draped across someone's arm.
Wow that brought back some painful memories, so glad those day's are gone.
Great,
Brenda

"I wish you would find the beauty inside of you and share it with the world."
I can visualize the mother trying to reason with her daughter as both stare into the bathroom mirror. I remember my mother having similar conversations with my sister who would NOT listen. Nicely done as you capture the universal theme.

You expressed yourself well. I love the praise you pour on your daughter when pointing out her gifts. I think you don't give your daughter enough credit in how she sees you. I'm sure she loves and adores you and listens carefully to your wonderful praise.
