I don't have a six, just know I wish like hell I did. This was a very heart wrenching and sad poem. The rhythm and the emotional tone were almost too real for words. You got me with the child's dialogue about fishing and then the last line. My son has already done one tour in Afghanistan and just learned he is being sent back. I know it's his duty and he does as well, but I identified with the father's memory of the child. a very touching poem.

Dear Dean, This is a beautiful poem. I am so sorry to hear about this young man. Being from a small town I understand how a loss like this hits everyone's heart. It feels like he was everyone's son. I am so glad to see you one. It is men and women like this that make it possible for us to celebrate this July 4. Thank you for sharing, Shirley

Congratulations in winning the contest. This is a poem that tugs at the heart, especially these lines, great reminders of childhood and of a life cut short ""Daddy, can't we both go fishin?" Oh...

Thanks, amada. Will was a great kid, and we all miss him. He firmly believed we were helping people over there, and he paid the ultimate price for those beliefs.
Thanks again for your heartwarming review and comments. ~Dean

This is very beautifully written and presented, Dean. It is a perfect memorial to a fallen soldier, your friend's son. I only wish we didn't send our children so freely to die on foreign soil. :-(

Hi Dean Kuch,
Your poem makes a wonderful tribute to a young man slain by a cowardly assassin with a twisted ideology. These cowardly scum must be expunged from every society. There is no other way.

I agree, Patrick. Unfortunately, these animals do not listen to reason. I don't think they are even capable of reason, to be quite honest.
I really appreciate your review, thank you.

Oh Dean this is so sad. It is a shame our young men are dying on foreign soils and those people don't even appreciate it. My tears are falling for this young man and his bereaved father.
Such a pity. It breaks my heart. Well deserved win with this moving poem. Nancy

Thank you very much, Nancy. I know Will's dad will appreciate your touching comments and exceptional rating honoring his son's memory just as much as I do. He's asked me to forward the responses to this poem to him. Of course I agreed . I mean, how could I say no?
Thanks so much again.

My heart goes out to the Will's family and to all the families who have lost loved ones during this extended war. This is a perfect contest entry. Good luck.

When we think of making the 'ultimate sacrifice', we usually think of just the person being buried. But the others who sacrifice, the parents, the wife, the relatives, the friends, they all feel the loss. This loss may subside, but it never goes away. Thank you for sharing.
