Hi John,
That's a terrific tale! I enjoyed it, guessing you'd run out of gas sooner or later. I especially liked the repetition... about the invisible passenger travelling with you, and the mumbling as well.
I was never a fan of Led Zeppelin, but I do turn up the volume and sing along with The Eagles quite often. I'm the invisible member of their band!
Nicely penned!
Cheers,
Kimbob

I have run out of gas exactly once in my driving lifetime, and it won't happen again (I hope) A quater mile from home might as well be 100 miles , especially if you don't have a gas can.

Great story and a great warning too, John. I enjoyed hearing how you kept intending to get the gas, but one thing or another led to forgetting to actually do it. Sometimes we just have to learn things the hard way.

The tire pressure light is another good one. At least with the DTE light, you don't have to reset anything to get it to go out like you do with the tire pressure light. You'd think if the car was smart enough to let you know when the tire pressure was low, it would be smart enough to know when you've filled the tire up and turn the dang light back off!

Excellent writing.
I made it through the roads overpass - (road's)
I am the champion at running out of gas. I've probably done it two dozen times. Several times I've coasted right to a pump. Once, in the Arkansas Ozarks, I felt the engine chug on an uphill grade The gauge read E. I milked it to the top and then faced 8 miles to the nearest gas station It was mostly all downhill, but not entirely. Going downhill, I hoped the remaining fuel would keep the engine idling enough for steering and braking (but only if absolutely necessary). I had to muscle the steering, but again I coasted to the pump. (My wife still doesn't believe it ten years later.)
Some modern cars, once run completely dry, will cost you $500 to have some sort of problem corrected Ask how I know. I never ran out again.
Sorry for the lengthy reply.

Here is a story one can identify with. It is very well written, and I liked the way you used the invisible passenger and the mumbling or not. That was effective. The ending elicited a chuckle. gayla

I am sorry to say I enjoyed your read VERY much, although I know I should have felt more compassion for you in your distress. My husband waits until his petrol tank is almost empty before refilling, and I know this same thing will happen to him one day. But it had better not happen when I am in the car with him. I've given up on explaining the many good reasons to have at least a quarter of a tank of fuel at all times. Your writing was excellent, and the moral was clear. I know you won't ever make that mistake again!

Trouble with cars, but it's part of life and still goes on and no matter what, a small repair it's welcomed. Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings and sorry for my rumbelling.

It's a bad situation when the DTE light comes on and your invisible passenger does not insist you do something about it almost instantly. However, I understand when there is a compounding issue of Jimmy Page doing a mesmerizing riff of the Immigrant Song with Robert Plante screaming at the top of his lungs.
That's a good one.

When I retired early due to disability, I gave my car to my son and I used the bus from then on. At first, it was hard but I got used to it with time. In big cities, bus routes are available to go everywhere. It's not too bad.

One of the good things about not having a car is not dealing with the cost of maintenance and the stress of being stranded.

Your flash fiction is straightforward to read. Great ending.

Well done.
