A story of overcoming adversity, I can relate to your true story as my granddaughter was born with a loss of hearing and after much prayer she can hear and is normal now at 18.

Children can be very cruel, but also some adults. They are the worst, they should be old enough to accept who you are, just because they don't understand is no excuse for being hurtful. I'm glad to read how you came through this, and that it no longer bothers you. And why should it? Well done, this is a great lesson for people who might have to face the same challenges one day, or more. Your grandfather was a very wise man. :)) Sandra xxx

I spent my life in and out of hospitals. I can understand your quandary. The phrase, " I have heard of it, but never seen one before", was a somewhat common refrain. We forge ahead unbound by other's expectations. My family treated me as perfectly normal. So, I was. Kudos to your family too. I love this place. I have found many equally wierd people here. Ain't it grand? You wrote a great story.
Being trapped by snow, I finally wrote my western, see what you think. "Hardly Quicksilver Jones". :-) Karen

The story is powerful, authentic, and inspiring. With minor improvements in structure and sensory detail, it would reach a perfect score.

Great post. Nicely written, too.
My physical deformity was simply being short. I understand that is relative. If I was born in Mexico, for example, I would be above average. Not so much in Marine Corps boot camp where at 5'4" and 118 lbs the Drill Instructors wanted to kill me (see the movie 'Full Metal Jacket').
Congratulations on your strong will and determination.
(Oh, I didn't let them get to me, either.) smiley face here

Well, thank you Wayne for your service. Height doesn't matter. Honor does and you showed the world you had it. I love that movie and it is the truest movie I have ever seen about boot camp. I joined the Army and had the 14 week Vietnam boot camp and it was like the movie. But I was the last unit to go through the 14 week. I never went to Vietnam.

I really enjoyed your amazing story Harry as you were not phased by your poor start in life and went on to prove all doctors wrong and graduate in the Army as one of the top physically able men. How proud you must be Harry. Thank you for sharing your sensitive story and I am sure you went from strength to strength in life, love Dolly x x x

Well, thank you Dolly for your kind review and kind words. Yes, I was always strong - I had no choice, be strong or die. I give thanks to those responsible though - my angels and God! I could not do that all alone.

What an amazing study of strength and courage! You had so much against you from the day you were born. You did not let your physical appearance define you. Nor did you met it limit you. Your excelling record in the military proved that. Kudos to you for not giving up!

I can relate to your well written authentic story in many ways. For one, my child was born by emergency c section and I almost died, so I could not see her for many hours. I didn't wake for hours. When I did, they put me in a recovery room hardly mentioning the child I just had so that is terrifying not knowing.
Also my father, brother and others served in various US Forces. So I understand your grandpa's words and what you overcame to achieve success with that. Thank you for your service.
My service was as a special education teacher so I can empathize with that kind of dynamic school etc. But my husband is most like your story. He had cancer at 13 months and lost an eye. I've asked Chris to read and write a short reply to you, too. It is below. Best wishes, Alex
My wife asked me to read your story and I can empathize. I lost an eye due to bilateral retinoblastoma at 13 months old and went through a lot with my eyesight and being bullied in life but now I am 50 and like you I overcame a lot as well and want you to know you are not alone. Thank you for your story and thank you for your service. - Sincerely, Chris
