She sounded like someone who loved life and being with people. This sounded like a lot of fun for all. Sorry for your loss but it sounded like she did it her way even in death. Great piece of writing. Gretchen

It's extremely interesting how special traditions end up becoming staples throughout the years. I could feel her excitement for DOD through your writing, something that I'm sure resonated with a lot of people, you especially. Excellent work.

What a great idea for a party. I'll have to share that with my Spanish friend. Ironic that Zoe passed away on the day DOD is traditionally celebrated. I love the humor of the downside you mention--cleaning up. Ugh.

Terry,

It is easy to understand why you were (and are) so in love with Zoe. The Day of the Dead isn't really about spooky ghosts and goblins, but about celebrating the lives of those who meant so much to us. Great rendering of the tale!

I'm sorry to read that your wife passed away on the very time of the celebration party date, November 1st. What a coincidence. I have never heard of these kinds of parties. Sounds like a party you would also have at Halloween.

I don't know how anyone could read this post and not give it a 6!!! This piece is, by far, among your best writings. It has 'Terry' in it from every angle, while allowing 'Day of The Dead' to star, with Zoe as the headliner co-star.

It is just well put-together, no spag issues, and a flow that is gentle to read. I thinking how wonderfully comforting it must have been to take this walk down memory lane and re-enjoy every special Day of the Dead activity.

My daughter's across-the-street neighbor is Mexican and, at Day of the Day, all of the Mexican (most of whom still live in Mexico) come to his house for celebration. Oftentimes, Mary and Dave or invited and, as you say, the first visit is a huge surprise and then the event because a day to remember everyone you have loved and who are now on the other side 'seeing through a glass clearly'.

I love it -- can you tell!!!

It must have brought a little pain to have written this, but like you I have a long term relationship with my wife, I know the wrench it would be on my life, but also in our kids, and particularly our grands, who adore her. Beautifully written my friend, thank you for your sharing, well done, blessings Roy

Hi Terry,
My mother and the Queen shared something too... they were the same age. The queen outlasted her by a couple of years, and their birthdays were a few months apart, but mom was raised with cocktails before dinner, and enjoyed a good party too.
I'm sure Zoe's having her own DOD parties up there and didn't want to miss not having to do all the work that year! ;)

I had never heard of The Day of the Dead. However, I like the idea of celebrating deceased loved ones. Your storytelling is becoming better and better, and more and more interesting, and I'm glad when I see you've posted. If the picture you included is Zoe, she was a very attractive lady. I'm also glad you keep her memory alive by writing about her.

You did a great job, Terry, with your story of the DOD
party Zoe always held for family and friends. I enjoyed
reading how your wife celebrated this day. That shows
her interests and acceptance of learning from and
celebrating other cultures.
Thanks for sharing, Jan
