OMG! I can't believe I just cried;I felt like I knew George. Well done! You communicated both the human and animal components of this story very well. Great choice for the artwork too. The artwork actually made me click your story. Belgrano's use of color is awesome and it's a beautiful tribute to George. :)

I love Belgrano's work and feel grateful that I found this picture to accompany George's story - thank you for sharing that! And thank you, also, for this exceptionally wonderful review, HD. I'm honored! Warm regards, Bev

What a beautiful tribute to George: a celebration before euthanizing. I love that he remained "statue-still" while the children took turns on his back. You make him sound so regal. A truly unique image at the end with Patches standing guard.

A great word for exactly how I felt about George, that he was regal. I'm grateful for your wonderful review, Spitfire, and appreciate the time you took to stop by and read. Warm regards, Bev

Hi Writingfundimension

A very movingly written piece, a fine tribute to a remarkable animal. I am often struck by how animals can affect and influence our lives. I think we are all enriched by encounters such as this.

I so agree, Patrick. This took place quite a few years ago and I still recall that look in George's eyes. Thank you very much for your excellent review and insights. Warmest regards, Bev

She, then, spoke of how George had been the only unconditionally loving man she'd ever known./That's particularly telling.----Patches knickered in the distance, and for days afterwards refused to eat./I had no idea horses could display human feelings like that.----This was a sad, but particularly well written account of a special horse. Well done.

This is a very nice story, it's soft and sweet. It allows the reader to get to know the characters more than expected in such a short piece, and so much was said and it was sad simply providing a feleling of simple and true love and friendship that allows the reader to feel even more complex feelings. Good Job!

I understand your friend's pain and the heartache she endured, the bravery, and love she showed George there at the end. He was more than just a pet. He was a part of the family, her family. It's not easy letting go. We had to put "Ace"--our "mutt" of a dog--down as well. We did it because we loved him. We hated to see him in the constant pain he endured, and would have endured simply because he loved us just as much. May both of their souls rest in peace. Thank-you for sharing.

Hi, PT. Thank you for your wonderful, supportive review. I'm sorry for the sad experience of losing Ace. I know the experience is one that you'll never forget. And you were kind to let Ace pass on with dignity. I have a client that keeps her fifteen year dog old alive - with the help of the veterinarian - because she can't stand the thought of how bad she'll feel when he's gone. It rather sickends me, frankly. Be well, Bev

I simply love this, Bev. I am such an animal lover and was so touched by your story. I just saw the movie, War Horse, and the relationship between George and Patches reminded me of the relationship between two horses in the movie. You have told this story beautifully, my friend. I felt like I was there at the wake too; that's how good your use of description is. And the very first sentence of the story really drew me in. You should continue to pursue your writing of stories, whether non-fiction or fiction, as you have a real knack for writing them. And, of course, don't forget to continue with your poetry too! I hope you get lots of sixes for this; it is so deserving. Wish I had one left for you, and I'm not just saying that because you are quickly becoming one of my favorites on this site either. Wow, thank you so much, Connie. What a gracious and supportive review. I thank you for your words here and the uplifting of my heart as a result. I'm going to continue more of this type of writing this year. I like the novels, but maybe short stories are more my forte. I actually got to thinking more about that after reading an interview with a writer in Writer's Digest who found that short stories were his niche. I promise to write some poetry, too LOL. I can't thank you enough for your beautiful support, my friend. Hugs, Bev

Just beautiful. It is some kind of cruel joke that we have to out last our animal friends. This is a wonderfully crafted and respectful window on the last hours of the big guy's life. I wish I too had known George.

Thank you so much for this lovely review, ATH. I wish that I had known George longer than just one day. Though I'd heard about him from Catherine, being in his presence was a truly amazing experience. Warmest regards, Bev

What an awesome way to say good-bye to an old friend. Kids sometimes have funerals for their pets after they die, but this is the first time I've ever heard of anyone having a wake while a pet was still alive.

I think Catherine is a special soul for even thinking of such a gesture for her horse. Thanks for sharing that thought with me and for your excellent review. Kindest regards, Bev
