"I prefer to keep them guessing."
A writer after my own heart. LOL! In my humble opinion (note the subtle jump over the legal hurdle) there exist many who would do better to just shut the large hole in their face and keep their opinions to themselves. But, you didn't hear that from me; and I will deny ever typing it.
Enjoyed!

Subtlety in our reaction to sheer stupidity is a lot more calming. Thanks.

You have said a mouth full here, and I catch what you are saying and in my own way agree with you. One person that irritates me but I say nothing is the person who is proud that they always tell the truth. They call a hear a heart, they tell the ugly that they are ugly they tell the fat that they should quit eating, they get on my nerves. By stating the obvious they have wasted my time and hurt other peoples feeling. Nice essay you have written And I enjoyed a lot.

That person sure sounds a lot like my mother. They take pride in their stones.

Hi,
I enjoyed your little essay here, but I think the quote ends with "...than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."
Also, this sentence is flawed.. >>> Hate mongering laws are meant to protect against radicals who expose violence as a means of converting or subverting those that disagree. <<< I think you mean 'espouse' not 'expose', and you should use 'those WHO disagree' not 'those that disagree'.
The sentiment on choosing silence is a good one though. Great job. Good luck in the contest.

I was struggling with the wording of that quote...thanks. Also right on other points. greatly appreciated.

I think your essay speaks well for your personal stand on people's opinions. Third paragraph, third sentence, you need a 't' to change 'mean' to 'meant'. I also think you wanted to use the word 'espouse' in that sentence. It now says 'expose', which I question. Happy days!

a thought provoking piece.
You have eloquently expressed boththe harm which comes from our words both in the public political sphere and also in private. Your conclusions to keep your thoughts to yourself are well understood.

Voltaire once said; "I don't agree with a word you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it." this said; beware of he says; "Now this is a fact! Generally he is confusing facts which are generally only provisional facts, with opinions; open to interpretation. Your next issue is more significant. What is it that gets hurt. It is surely only your ego and your pride. To recognize is to gain a peculiar freedom. And to gain this freedom is to turn the other cheek. -Ekim777

i agree with what you have said.people do mistake silence for foolishness and they don,t have the broader vision to look at things and interpret them doing full justice.the just wanna be heard and gain popularity and its so sick.just can't be tolerated.just a typo
"Mt mother once told me, "Words are like arrows. When you release them you'll never know how far they will go and what they will strike."
it should be 'My'.you did a wonderful task writing this

Thanks for the typo alert.
Yes, some people definitely like the sound of their own voice.
