"Tie a yellow ribbon 'round the old oak tree!"
Goes to show, a person should be careful what they vow.
Well written story.
Good luck in the contest.

This is an unusual, but fitting, Christmas story. Suggestion: 'I introduced myself and (said) that I was a counselor.' I like the way you ended the story with the stable draped in forgiveness and reconciliation, and bringing out the white Christmas linens. You brought the story into the lap of the readers. Nicely done!

Thank you for a wonderful review. You did a wonderful job of the way I wanted this story to end up. You are one of the few that figured it out. -Bill

An interesting story, and timely for the season. It is well told and has a perfect theme and resolution.
notes:
A soldier sitting across the aisle was on his way back to his barracks near Monterey.
- This line should follow after you decided to speak to him. That explains how you knew this.

I agree with you. I also overheard him telling the conductor why he was on the train. I should have put this in. Thanks for the review.-Bill

Great story, very touching. It reminded me of a few similar travel situations I have had. Of course not as meaningful and powerful as yours.. Your story has encouraged me to write them down. I'll try and post one or two of them in the next few days.

I think it's a poignant little story of a homecoming, a reconciliation. The symbolism of the white sheets in front of the house, life all the tensions and apprehensions in the hesitant young soldier who is estranged from his parents. Bringing us into this by overhearing a conversation on a train makes this much more approachable for the readers. estory

This story, Waving a White Flag, is one that would melt the hearts of anyone who has ever wanted so much to be given the opportunity to find and provide the means to reunion. Nice one, William.

Wow and this is actually a true story - restores my faith in humanity and our ability( and sometimes we have to dig deep to find it!!)to forgive others especially, perhaps, our nearest and dearest. Thanks for lifting our spirits.
