You sure brought back some memories. I remember wearing I like Ike button they gave me at school. I went into service at age 17 1955 just after Korea but intime to deal with Russia during the cold war. Yes, I had a male teacher who also taught us math. I think he got fired but not sure.

I enjoyed reading your memoir of 1953ish. There were many clever parts, and a couple of times where I laughed out loud. I will get to those in the next section:
Thoughts As I Read:
---Things have not changed much with some of these coaches posing as teachers. I suffered through a few myself from 1988-1992. There were three I remember right now that were awful to a nerdy fat kid like me.
---"We had to draw diagrams of various objects, internal organs and close ups of bones or cell structures." --I love this! I always enjoyed these types of assignments myself where we could use our artistic ability. I was a civics teacher for several years, and I had a couple of assignments like this for my students.
---"Actually, the ones I claimed to dislike were the ones I had crushes on. It was my excuse to talk about them without admitting liking them." --You know, why didn't we boys realize this stuff? I could have actually had more interest than I thought I did if I had known that and acted accordingly for my own social benefit! *laughs*
---"What came out of my mouth was ridiculous. "Oh, I didn't realize that rabbits laid eggs." --Oh no! This made me laugh out loud. But you know, we all had moments like this when we said something and afterwards wanted to crawl into one of our shoes and die. Marvin is quite the clever one with that follow-up joke, though. I hope he wasn't mean about it.
---"I decided senior classmates were out of my league. I was going to have to practice on someone, I didn't find so attractive." --This was probably a good move. At that age, we all need to make our mistakes and "learn the craft" of dating. There is a HUGE difference between a freshman and a senior in this respect.
I did have a few things to point out to you Beth that you can fix up real quick if you agree:
---"Coach Beatty expressed disgust and [make] fun of them for sitting on the sidelines." --I think it should be "made."
---"A few years[,] later, I would blame my" --This comma should be removed as unecessary.
---"He was a star football player[,] and I thought he was the cutest guy in the whole school." --There should always be a comma when there are two independent clauses separated by a conjuction.
---"when I could find an occasion[ed] to talk to him." --I think this "-ed" was put here by mistake.
---"The Rosenberg couple were both tried and executed for their part in the extermination of so many Jews in Germany during the WWII." --You might double-check me, but I think Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed for espionage, specifically for giving atomic secrets to the Soviet Union.
I really enjoyed meeting you Beth! I don't think I have reviewed your work before this. It was fascinating to hear what it was like being in high school during that tumultous time in American history. Talk to you again soon!
