It was so sad to read about Robin's death. I didn't know drugs were the cause, I thought it was the cost of two very expensive divorces. Your words are just right, as usual, people are stupid for thinking they can get away with taking drugs. Good luck in the contest! xsx sandra

Thanks so much, Sandra, I truly appreciate your encouraging review. I felt it would do much better than it is in the voting booths, but I was very happy with what it had to say about the ghosts of addiction. I only wish more voters were, LOL...

'I Knew Better' is a well-written and fitting tribute to a talented, but haunted man. It was a pleasure to both read and review a work of this standard.

Your poems always seem scary...to the point of my wanting to run and make my prayers. Trying to refrain from the devil. But you have become quite the writer...as well as decorated in your grind. And that's what's up. Stay strong in your writing.

Thanks, TB, and much could be said about you, as well. There's not anyone around who writes like you do, and I hope I fall into that same category.
I sincerely appreciate your kind comments and review. And you do the same!:}

a lovely tribute to Robbie Williams, it is amazing how much he was loved by millions, and he need only one person to love him and he was unable to do that.
Well written
Well done

Thanks, Mary, and you're right. It is such a sad, sad situation when someone as gifted as Robin feels they have nothing left to offer any longer. I simply can't wrap my mind around that concept, as each and every one of us has something to contribute in some small way.
I sincerely appreciate your thoughts and encouraging review. I needed it!

good alliteration in gaunt through graveyard gates and in bold and brave and in peer pressure
solid rhyming couplets
good use of enjambment
strong expression of raw emotion in this poem depicting the power and terrible consequences of drug addiction

Addiction of any kind is such a miserable way to get through ones life. So little compassion and/or understanding from the public. Most feel you should be able to just turn your back on an addiction, choose a different path, live a different life. If only it were that simple. Very good interpretation of the struggle. Thanks for posting.

Thanks, gypsycaravan, and you are 100% correct. I have never been addicted to hard drugs, alcohol, or anything like that. But cigarettes and coffee... I still struggle with both of those today. An addiction is an addiction, no matter how you try and sugar coat it. One is just as devastating to our psyches as is another.
So, no, it is never so easy just to turn and simply walk away. It is much more difficult than that.
thanks so much for your review, my friend.

Definitely scary, not funny. 'Stupid brave' is exactly it with the benefit of hindsight. Yours is an intriguing approach to the contest, with the ghost being your recently departed self. It works well.

Thanks so much, Tony, I truly appreciate that. I only wish more voters felt it worked as well as you do, LOL.
Thanks again for you very encouraging review.

Life is funny and has a sense of humor that is not always funny. How can someone so humorous be hurting inside so bad. Rest in peace Robin.

Yes, this is excellent. This is worthy of 6 stars, but alas, I've run out. A telling tale, a haunting tale of truth and of grave misfortune. Well done!

If heroin doesn't send one to an early grave, most that try it are still bound to a hard to kick, expensive habit. Well done with your entry, Buck
