I am trying to wipe my tears, and they keep flowing.

My friend Catherine invited me to attend his wake. (comma after friend)

He walked slowly next to her through the carefully tended garden (slowly beside her)

The horse remained statue-still as if he knew that he was king for the day and nickered occasionally (that is an extra word and can be omitted)

A bell tinkled and Catherine asked for a few minutes of silence, so that we could pray for George and for her. (again, omit that)

Hi, barbara. Thank you so much for sending along this excellent review. I really appreciate your suggestions for making the piece stronger. I did have a comma before Catherine and was told by another reviewer that it didn't belong there! What's a girl to do? hehe Kind regards, Bev

Well, I thought I was correct so I went to my books. The Writer's Digest; Grammar Desk Reference, on page says the name needs to be set off by commas. Merriam-Webster's Guide to Punctuation adn Style, on page 14 says the name needs to be set off by commas. You might want to do your own research, but I would say it's needed.

I am definitely going with you. I think Brooke would agree, too. Thanks much for clearing that up, barbara.

    I think she would too.

This is a sad but wonderful story. Sad because Catherine lost a beloved horse whose life she once saved, sad because Patches lost a friend and I'm a firm believer that animals feel a sense of loss. Wonderful because George did have happy years because Catherine felt compassion and gave him refuge and he in a way saved her life. And I love horses! My heart will always remember Dust O' Gold, a white quarter horse, Charlie, a Tennessee Walker and Wynter, a grey. Great human and animal interest story!

I truly did not feel overwhelming sadness during the day. George's life had become one of unbearable pain and it was the best send-off anyone could ever give a friend. I was so proud to have been part of it. Your words speak perfectly to how that day felt for me. And thank you for your exceptionally generous review. I'm very touched! Blessings, Bev

Doing the humane thing is a tough responsibility but a responsibility nonetheless. We have had (over the years) to make decisions (never for a horse) and these decisions are never easy. And there is a relief that our friend isn't suffering anymore. Good write.

I loved this story! I own many horses and you truly captured not only the beauty they themselves have, but the beauty they bring to the lives of their owners. I have to admit I ranked you so high simply because of the subject matter. Don't get me wrong, I loved the way you told your tale. It was poignant and heartfelt, touching me deeply, but so few people recognize how hard it is to let go of a friend like this. Horses are more than pets, they become members of our family. And the fact you addressed the relationship horses have with each other by bringing in Patches was wonderful. I have a horse that is unbelievably attached to one of our donkeys and follows him everywhere. They are best friends. So again, I say kudos. Wonderful story, and excellent plot. I know I'm biased, but I still mean every word.

Hello, texanlady. I agree with you. Somehow people can understand the loss of a dog or cat, but not so much a larger pet like a horse. But I have quite a few horse-loving friends and they are passionate about their horses. After meeting George, I can honestly understand that. So thank you for your recognition here on behalf of all those wonderful horses out there and their loving owners. We are honored! Blessings, Bev

Writingfundimension,

You have written a very special story which brought tears to my eyes. I have never known a horse but, like you, have admired afar their strength, pride. This story made me cry which tells me that you were able to put your feelings on the paper and draw me into your story. Great work.

Hi there, This story made me feel very sad for George. I enjoyed reading your story. I make Colloidal Silver and this would of saved Georges life. A lot of people don't know about it, it's on the internet. My dog was poisoned and I used it on her and saved her life. I've started a book on it 2 chapters so far, so tell your friend. It also kills cancer cells off. Phamachueticals will lose a lot of money if everyone used this stuff. Doctors and vets would lose a lot of money as well. Thanks for sharing

AMAZING Non-Fiction's story! By the end of this wonderful reading there were tears in my eyes. I love horses, and dogs, and free birds in my garden. This was a story that filled heart and brightened soul.
Many blesses for you my friend! You deserve six stars, but this is all I have now... Sorry!
:)

Thanks for sharing your personal story. I'll admit I thought at first it was a wake for a person so when I read "Put him down" I was taken aback. When I realized it was about a horse I was impressed. Your story was well put together and flowed well. A fitting eulogy for George in my opinion.
