"If Only..." is a poem about the loss of face-to-face Christmas reunions, where the central knot of the family is all together to catch up, to reminisce, to hug and kiss. This topic is central to unhappy discussions of 'the way things used to be,' discussions that are really a lament regarding all that one loses throughout his or her life; and this reality becomes more stingingly felt as the pace of social change moves more and more swiftly. What could be more powerful than memories of a cozy sharing of love, spiced with the presentations of gifts symbolizing love?
I think the flow and lining of this poem could be improved in a rewrite, and that an inclusion of humorous details might strengthen the emotions stimulated by this poem.

Frank, I can only agree with you for certain. I blasted this out without the needed polish. Merry Christmas, Sir!
Comment from Sarah Das Gupta
This is a poem of nostalgia and regret for Christmases past. Inevitably children and grandchildren grow up and move away. Older people feel isolated and the internet is no substitute for human contact!

Comment from Mario PIERRE
Loved the poem/story!!! It reveals with a bitter tenderness, the lost era of Christmas reunion and the excited anticipation of kids and grown ups alike driving or riding on trains to join " mother" where the house is warm with love... vary touching, and the end knocks you a bit, lol...
