A simply told story. The words portray well the sorrow and horrors of wars. The images are clear. The pace is good. The poem stays on point. It comes across as a poignant homage.

Thanks for sharing.

    Thank you, dellsworthpoet.
I like to write some poems that touch others with
    humanitarian messages.
    The after effects of war
    can also be about people
    forgetting our soldiers
    sacrifice. We should never
    forget. Many blessings to
    you.

This is a great tribute. "Welcome Home," is a great title. I enjoyed your post. There are so many men and women living and mangled. It is sad to visit the Veterans Hospital. The hospital is full of patients and visitors. Young and old. Welcome home to those that are living. And may the dead rest in peace. Thank you.

    Thank you so much,
Carolyn. War is such a tragic
    destroyer of youth. Our
soldier veterans should always get the best care that
    they deserve. The politicians
    finally passed burn pits
    legislation to begin to treat
more Middle East war veterans. Many soldiers
    Suffered from Agent Orange
    from the Vietnam War Era.
    The Camp Lejeune poisoned
    water was another tragic
lack of caring by the U.S.
    government. Thank you for
    the 5 stars. Many blessings
    to you.

My brother fought in Vietnam and was even wounded, albeit no badly, my dad fought in WW2 was at Dunkirk in the beginning of the war. The young lives wasted, and the carnage is terrible, but one must think of those left behind, particularly mums, this is beautifully and sensitively written dear Regina, excellent post, blessings Roy

    Thank you so much, Roy.
    I also appreciate the British
    soldiers sacrifices too. Yes,
    the soldiers families are
    so deeply affected too.
It takes a toll on them also.
    Thank you for taking the
time to read and review my
    poem. Many blessings to
    you and your family.

within the first stanza the 'it never goes away' made something in my heart shatter because that small phrase really carries so much weight to it, something so heavy to come from a man so young it's almost dizzying

    Hello newilk. War destroys
    so many young lives. It
    deeply affects their families
too. I had a loss for words
    right after the Vietnam
    veteran said that sentence
    to me. My throat narrows
    and tightens up when I
    feel some of my empathic
    sorrow. Our soldiers always
    deserve good medical care
    too. The Middle East wars
    burn pit injury legislation
    was finally passed as an
    open door for our soldiers
    to be taken seriously. It's
    about time. Your reaction
to my poem tells me you
    have a big heart. Many
    blessings to you.

I just awarded my last six to another wartime entry. However, your entry too is so deserving. The message is so clearly stated and rings with the heartaches of war. The visual fits perfectly. I am a veteran, and my brother is too. He served in Vietnam, and I served behind the Berlin wall before it was removed. I would drop the first line down one space and enlarge the text by one size so all the older vets like me can read your honoring tribute to all Vets. It is so well-done.

    Thank you so much, dear
    Sandra, for your volunteering
to serve back then. It takes
a lot of guts for a woman
    to sign up for military
    service. I appreciate your
    brother stepping up to the
    plate too. A big welcome
    home to you both. Many
    blessings to you and your
    family.

Hi Regina, This is a beautiful Free Verse. I really enjoyed reading it.
I do have a suggestion though, break it up into sentences. Use periods and capital letters in places, it will read better. As it stands now, each stanza reads like a run-on sentence. For example:
Stanza 1 could break at...
line 3 showed.
line 4 My
line 7 All
line 8 cease.
line 9 Soldiers
line 10 Americana.
line 11 Their
line 12 soul.
line 13 Not
line 14 homecoming.

Did you mean to put (...) after homecoming or (.) because you put (..) which is nothing.

So, my only suggestion is on punctuation to make for an easier read, your words are perfect. Susan :)

    Our soldiers have gone
    through so much tragedy
    and so much deserve good
care by the VA hospitals. Many blessings to you.

This is a beautifully written poem for this contest. I think it will be a very strong entry. Good luck. The story and message you deliver are compelling. I also love the way you presented the poem in lowercase, in my opinion, it made it more powerful. I am sorry I am out of 6s. Exceptional work. Terry.

    Our soldiers deserve all the
    best care they need.. The
    politicians finally passed
    the Middle East wars
    burn pit legislation. The sad
    story is, so many soldiers
    have died waiting for
good health care at the VA
    hospitals. They are honored
    and remembered by so many
    Americans. Many blessings
    to you.

Regina...

This is excellent writing. Well done1

You capture the honor, sacrifice, camaraderie, and heroism of military service and juxtapose it, very effectively, against the pain, horrors, brokenness, and tragedy of life as a veteran.

Without yet having seen other entries, I cannot imagine your poem not receiving my vote. It should do very well in the contest.

Best of luck.

"Their nightmares flashing as
they wake up sweating in
their sheets in the dark,
still hearing the firefight,
still seeing the VC,
and hearing the life breaths
leaving mortally wounded
brothers,..."

You bring to life the horror of war. This reminds me so much of what Ukraine faces now.
But on a personal level, I identify with this --
"I met a woman in
her eighties,
a little confused,
couldn't remember
where her son's grave
was located,
her son was a
Vietnam veteran,
she told me her
daughter in law
couldn't bear to
visit his grave,..." Some loss is nigh on impossible...

Wish I had a six for this stunning free verse.

    Thank you so much,
    Ideasaregems. When I wrote
this tribute poem I tried to
walk in their shoes, empathically. Yet, only the
    war vets themselves really
    know the horror of war.
    Their families suffer too.
    Thank you so much for
taking the time to read my
poem, and for the 5 stars.
    Many blessings to you.

This work has reached the exceptional level

I really enjoyed reading your poem. It is well written, and thought provoking. Makes a person stop and think. This is a very heartfelt and amazing poem that you shared, and it is an exceptional way to pay tribute to our service men and women. The flow of the words were done perfectly, and it tells a sad, but true story, of some of the way Veterans still suffer even after they come home. Thank you for sharing.

    Thank you so much,
Jacquelyn, for taking the time to read my poem tribute
to our troops. War is such
    a tragic and heartbreaking
    shame on humanity. The
politicians wage the wars and its the youth who have
to go and fight it. Thank you
so much for the 6 stars.
    Many blessings to you.
