depression is a dreadful disease...52 total reviews

This is definitely one of the most horrible diseases to suffer. There is little compassion or empathy for those suffering through it. Very little is known and very little is done to help. I have a 31 year old grandson who suffers with it daily and his entire life has been a struggle. I do believe his strong faith in God is the only thing that has kept him from taking his own life a few times. That, and having a family that he knows loves him so much. Thanks for writing this powerful poem.

Thank you my friend for your strong review on this dreadful disease. I'm very sorry to hear that about your son, I will definitely pray for him. I believe in the power of our prayers. I've been fighting depression since the day I was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy 22 years ago. God bless you and your family. Bill

Thank you for adding my grandson to your prayer list. You have now been added to mine, also.

G'day Bill. This is a great piece mate. It flows beautifully and the rhyming is spot on. Depression is an all too often tragic condition which affects one in five people, that's a lot. Cheers and great work, Fez

Thanks Fez for your excellent review, I appreciate it. Yes, you're right, this awful disease affects so many people. Some to the point of suicide. Take care my friend. Bill

I commend you for writing on the subject. It is a disease and treatment is necessary. The problem as I see it, and this has to do with your poem, every clinical depressed person I have talked with said they reached out for God but there came a time where even that could happen, they were completely mobilized. I personally believer that Christ is the solution to all of mans problems. But just as the miracle of healing does not always cure cancer, or colds, or broken hearts, sometimes depression is deadly. You might want to incorporate your footnotes and your poem combining them. I find this subject so paradoxical...but kudos to you for bringing awaremenss.

Hi,
Excellent write. It is an awful place to be. You just want to hide away and not see anyone, do anything, you just can't cope. Having been down that black hole, it's a place that once you come out ---- it will always tug at you and beckon you back when the least little thing is off-putting.
Good luck in the contest.
Cheers & Blessings

Hi Jax - that sounds like I'm hi-jacking a plane (ha). Thanks my friend for your comments, you're exactly right. We all have sudden bouts with this awful disease all our lives. Take care and have a great day my friend. Bill

I liked the easy flow of this poem, despite the desperate subject matter. As one who has suffered from this debilitating disease my whole life, it is good to gain support from the unlikeliest of places, like here. Well-written.

Thank you for your excellent review my friend. I think this awful disease touches all our lives sooner or later. Some much worse than others. I've been fighting it every since the day I was diagnosed with a life threatening disease. Take care of yourself and feel better my friend. Bill

This poem is an accurate description of depression--an emotion I experienced long ago. I identify with the words and I understand them. My hope is that this poem helps someone who is experiences depression now.
Thank you for sharing and I wish you the best in the contest.

Thank you my friend for your excellent review. I had a response from a member that said in their own words, "You'll never know how much this poem really, really, really helped me." That made my day. I've been fighting this awful disease since the day I was diagnosed with a form of muscular dystrophy (MG) 22 years ago. It sounds like you have conquered this beast and that's wonderful news. Take care and have a great weekend. Bill

Your rhyming of words creates a smooth flow of lines and a strong steady beat. Your use of words like terrible thoughts and feeling so alone give a strong image of what depression feels like. I like the last verse where turning to God can lead to healing.

Nicely written with a good clear understandable message. Your rhyme is smooth and this is an easy read. I wonder why since you used capitals to start lines and commas to separate verse you didn't use periods to end your phrases. Not that it's wrong but just wondered. Congratulations on a fine write and good luck in the contest. Robt.

Thanks for your review and welcome to this site. You'll discover after being here awhile, that punctuation is used as little as possible in many styles of poetry. Have a nice day.

The six is for a poem that explains this disease perfectly. I have suffered from it all my life and, although some days are better than others, I live in dread of taking to my bed and never getting up. Good luck in the contest and thank you for sharing.

Thank you my friend for your wonderful review and rating, I really appreciate it. I am so sorry that you suffer with this disease. I have fought depression for 22 years, since the day I was diagnosed with a non-curable life threatening disease (muscular dystrophy). Take care of yourself and I just said a prayer for you. I believe in the power of prayer. Thanks and I hope you feel better real soon my friend.

Depression is a dreadful disease. I have suffered from it. I disagree though that everyone has suffered from it. Many never have and don't know what we go through. Good luck to you.
