Quite simply one of the best pieces of work I have read on this site. Courageous and original, simply stated and consistent throughout. You brought a lump to my throat at the end through the repetition of those last two lines, reminding us once again that we are all one.

This is a very compelling story! I remember that war, and I feel the ache for those who died fighting for a free America. I also feel the 'Shame' of knowing that I am an american and allowed our country to perform such atrocities to those poor Japanese descendants that didn't deserve to be treated that way because of fear. I hope someday they will be able to truly "forgive us our atrocities". No SPAG. Very well done!

I am only responding to this poem because of a factual error. A US serviceman would not have been able to enlist and then go to the Philipines to be captured at the time you're talking about. The US soldiers PRESENT in the Phillipines at the outbreak of war were those who were captured.

Hello: Thank you for stopping by and reviewng. I am afraid that you have misread/misinterpreted my offering My presentation is factual. My uncle, Sargent William Kenel enlisted in the ArmyAir Force on following the attack on Pearl Harbor. After receiving training, he set sail to the Philippines aboard the USA Transport "Etolin." Upon arrival, he was stationed on the Island of Corregidor and was there when the Philippine Islands were captured by the Japanese. He survived the atrocities of both the Bataan Death March and survived Cabanatuan Prison.
I am not really sure where your confusion rests. In the poem, I write that the young American enlisted, went to the Philippines, and while there was captured by the Japanese! He was present at the time that the Philippines fell to the Japanese. He was captured by the Japanese. Thus he was one of thousands who were present in the Philippines. Again, my representation is accurate. Thank you. diane
