This poem broke me. I cried upon reading it thinking of all those brave men and women who never came home to the families who waited and prayed during the horrors of war.

This is a poem that many can relate to. My father was gone for three years during WWII and I am sure my mother always worried he would not come home. Your poetic form is smooth and your vivid use of words bring forth emotions and feelings. The reader can see this lady in her sadness and loss. Best wishes for the contest.

Thanks for the review, Elaine. "War is hell on the homefront, too."

I have often talked about the people left behind to face the grief of losing someone. The person who dies goes to a "new" life whatever it is--whatever one believes. Thanks for sharing. I like the visual. Best for the contest.

This is the horrible and sad story many military wives experience during war. It's heartbreaking to think of a young mother who knows her baby will never be held by its father. Your story in a poem is sad but well told. I wish you the best in the contest.

a glowing tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice loved the last sad lines

And in the future, on some distant day,
When she can put those dog tags out of sight,
And all those dreadful nightmares go away,
She'll get on with her life, but not tonight.

Such a sad poem. War is so ugly and cruel. I look forward to a time where there is peace and love. Your poem is well written and descriptive. Very good job.

A truly emotional story/poem. I was born at the end of the war and in those days the postman delivered a telegram. No feeling, just schock. You should win this contest because your words are extremely sad. K xx

Thanks, Kay. I, too, was born at the end of the war. Luckily, my father returned.

Very well written. Sad it is and the grief of the widow is felt immediately and powerfully. Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately, it is a situation faced by too many people. All the best in the contest.

Very well said! One knock on the door and your life changes forever. We all need this reminder of those who give their lives for (hopefully) freedom in some foreign land. Thank you.

Thanks for the review. You are right about the knock on the door. I think there is another poem there.
