Even I've heard of Babe Ruth. One point for me. I much appreciated your note for us ignoramuses (very useful). Three points for you. Loved the writing. A world series with only two nations, one of which is very minor - great attitude! I also liked the shift to the personal, and the fact that at your own level, you were the slugger of the league - and thus by extrapolation, World Record Holder - congratulations!! Kate xx
I had a question as I read. How old was Babe Ruth when he died - shock! Google told me only 53. Horrible.

Kate, thank you for your wonderful review. Babe died early too, he too, was a boozer. Terry.

Awesome. My fondest memory is 1968 the Detroit Tigers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series. I lived in Detroit at the time. I hung around the job for a solid hour after work just to hear the outcome of the final game before heading home. I got off work at 4:30 pm, I did not get home until about 9:30 pm. Just about any bar you went into you could get a free beer on the house. It was a great year. Al Kaline, Mickey Lolich, Willie Horton, Denny McClain who won 30 games as a pitcher that year. It was an awesome year.

Nomi, I remember that well, Detroit had a great team. And don't forget super pinch hitter Gates Brown. Thank you for reading. Terry.

Thanks for reminding me, I could not think of his name. Imagine that, now who could forget a name like that? Denny McClain could have gone down in history as one of the greats, but once a flake, pretty much always a flake. What a waste of talent.

My manager in Middle League (established in Bakersfield, CA a year before I became eligible to play, at 13) was Jim Cobb. He was Ty Cobb's son and a heck of a good manager. He taught me there was no substitute for hustle. Of the ones you mentioned, Roger Maris was my hero. The steroid generation tainted the homerun so much that I'm afraid it's irrecoverable.

Jay, Wow at connection to Ty Cobb, very cool. Thank you for reading. Terry.

You know, as I wrote that about Ty Cobb, I was wondering if I could have been sold a bill of goods back then. I was young and impressionable. So I looked up Ty Cobb in Wikipedia. I was disappointed as I looked at his family and didn't find a son, Jim. So, I did a search for "Jim Cobb and Ty Cobb" and Wikipedia had a picture of Jim Cobb and his wife looking through Ty Cobb memorabilia. Definitely my manager, Jim. And the resemblance is remarkable, so now I am reiterating to you with more confidence what I said in my review.

Jay, it might have been a good story if he had lied!
-
Probably a better one because he'd have worked on it all his life -- his magnum opus!
Comment from Sanku
I am innocent when it comes to base ball But I know that it is in the blood of every American .So the first part was really educational for me. But the fall of your hero is really sad. From an idol to a drunk! I loved the poem too, especially the last stanza.

Sanku for reading my story. I think that some sports heroes from anywhere in world often have feet of clay. Terry.

Yeah I think Bjorn Born just managed to avoid bankruptcy -too many marriages and wrong business investments!

Thank you for the interesting read, and for the extra information for us "outsiders"! That does help make sense of a game which has not really caught on much over here. Your article was well researched, and I liked the ending, with the focus on what really matters. Thanks for sharing.

Wendy, thank you for reading. Being an old guy, it did not take any research on my part, just a pretty good memory. Terry.

This is a really good article about baseball. I shared your admiration for Maris and Mantle. I collected their baseball cards and lost them all when my parent's house flooded. I was the pitcher for my upper grade country school team until a line drive caught me right between my eyes.

Carol, thank you for your review. That is too bad about those baseball cards, and of course the line drive. Terry.
Comment from Tom Horonzy
Roger the dodger got his 61st in the last game, wasn't it? Judge came close. The pressure showed. In addition to him, I checked the Angels box score daily as a fan of Trout, who missed six weeks, and Ohtani who was brilliant, and lastly my beloved Phillies, who made the playoffs for the first time since '11. Have they a chance? Highly improbable with their pen, and tendency to lift the starters sooner than the arms of yesteryear.

Terry, Terry, Terry, I have two favorite writers on here, and they are both you. This is awesome, great, and a myriad of other wonderful words that I can't pull out of my tired brain right now.
I gave you a six because of this paragraph:
I know the cynics are asking, "How can twenty-nine teams in the US and one in Canada make a World Series?" The answer is we have been doing this for a hundred years. Please don't bother us with details. We are not going to change--so there.
Perfectly explained to the other hundred and some odd countries in the world, besides, most of those countries have players on our teams.
Once again, you hit another homerun with this piece of work. (Yes, I did go there)

Terry, you are quite the baseball historian! Rod Carew and Harmon Killebrew were my favorites as a kid. Both turned out to be pretty great human beings even after their careers ended. I have wonderful memories with my father listening to the game on the radio while sitting on our patio watching the sky as day became dusk and dusk became darkness.
