You began your story "My mind imagined the worst." Now my mind is imagining your story will be best in the contest. I sure hope so.
You build up the tension well...every parent's worst fear, their child goes missing. Angels come in all shapes and sizes. Gary came back to retrieve Shara - family is forever.

Thank you for your super review, and also for your good wishes. Yes, I felt that the love she showed Gary when he was her dog was being returned to her in her need to help her family. (It's all totally fiction of course, except that I know a dog called Gary!) (One person asked why Gary didn't just lead her home, and I had to laugh at myself, because I didn't even think of that!)

Stunning story Wendy. Last year, someone wrote a story with a twist about a dog that rescued a child--but the dog wasn't dead. Yours makes it a double surprise. Brilliant.

Great story! Wonderfully told.
I'll bet someone will wonder why the dog didn't lead her home.
Tell them that in the 4 remaining words to the limit, you did well to get her as far as the creek bed.
Best wishes.

Ha, ha! To be honest, I didn't think of the dog leading her all the way home! Lol. My imagination is fairly limited .... Thanks so much for reviewing. I appreciate it.

Well done on this great story, a great entry for the contest. How scary it must be for a small child to wander away, and what a relief when they are found. Liked the ending very much.

This makes for a great read - first the heightened sense of suspense searching for the missing child and finally the discovery of the child safe and well and the interesting, supernatural twist - well done

Your story made me cry - in the best possible sense. I suspected all along that the child was safe. The depth of the mother's fear, and the mounting tension added by the unknown Gary, alerted my over-saturated with TV images brain that things were probably not as they appeared, but I suspected Shara had found someplace safe and warm. Nor did I expect Gary to be a villain of any kind (perhaps an angel). What I never expected - but accepted completely thanks to the lovely way in which you presented it - was that he was the ghost of a beloved family pet. I was only too happy to willfully suspend my disbelief, and enjoy this very happy ending to a beautifully-written story.

You're very welcome, Wendy. How could I not give six stars to something that had me crying for all the right reasons?
-

Great story for the contest. This time I guessed the final twist would be that Gary was a guardian angel or a kind dog. I loved it. Well done!!!!!!!!!!. A cool supernatural story.

Loved it! Of course! God can send an angel in the form of a golden retriever to comfort and protect Shara. That's a great story and I loved how you described the worry of the mom. Hope you do well in the contest!
