You did a great job, Mary. I enjoyed reading your story for its historical references and tribute to those at rest in the two cemeteries. Your words are descriptive with great details. These two would be of interest to visit. However, I wouldn't want to be married there.

What a thoughtful piece. I like the idea that these two cemeteries rest right adjacent to one another. Imagine.
It's a perfect microcosm of life - with the classes - the rich and famous and the poor and unnoticed. And the final message - when we die, none of it matters anymore. Even if there is a large stone to mark our passing - we're still just as stone-cold dead.

I really liked your words to the effect that 'Death is the Great Equalizer,' no matter who you were, or how rich or famous.

My grandparents too were immigrants from Ireland and Newfoundland and I know how hard the worked to make a living.

I do understand your problem. I'm not a poet either. I only write prose. My attempts at poetry have been a horrible failure. But that being said, I enjoyed learning about the contrast of the two cemeteries and the reminder that in the end all must face God and are held accountable for their lives, not their riches.

This is an excellent essay, Mary. It's interesting to learn the differences between these two cemeteries. I've never paid too much attention, but I don't think there are many in Canada that boast such elaborate monuments. You've described them both very well. Thanks for sharing.

This is a very interesting post. I always found cemeteries interesting to walk through and read the headstones and try to imagine who the people were and what they were like. Although the Mount Auburn Cemetery sounds very much like a park, I think the Cambridge Cemetery sounds just as interesting even without the unique monuments and flowering gardens. You are quite right in your closing that no matter who we are, what we've done in life, or how we die, we ultimately come to the same end. Well done.
