I think that you wrote a great and beautiful poem! It is very well written and creative. I love the connection between Jim and the Mule. I'm sorry that Jim passed away, but it was good that he found the mule again. Thank you for sharing.

This is lovely and sad and sweet and touching. You truly bring Jim and Molly to life in a way that doesn't make us pity Molly being Jim's best friend but, rather, makes us admire the relationship. I enjoyed the dialect you used, which sounded appropriate and not forced.
While your rhymes all work, I wonder if you were aware that you'd rhymed "away" and "day" three times, and not in any pattern that might suggest it was deliberate.
Also, if I might make one suggestion, your poem flows very smoothly until the line, "waitin' fer Molly ta' come back." If you say, "waitin' fer Molly the mule ta' come back," it will fix the problem while fitting in perfectly with the way you're telling the story.

such a sweet poem! I like the 'cowboy language', and it rhymed quite well. I also loved the moral/message. I wish you luck in the contest, and may God bless you!

Such a wonderful stor told through this poem, very descriptive and interesting. I think the format chosen suits it really well to combine the comical with the heartfelt.

Beautifully written bitter-sweet poem. I love your picturesque words to describe Ol' Jim and Molly and your ending "The following summer, Ol' Jim passed away. So, I'm sure he found his Molly that day." brought tears to my eyes.

I certainly did enjoy this. I grew up on a steady diet of John Wayne westerns. I'm pretty sure I've seen them all. This is delightful, Willie, and I wish you every success in the contest,
Sally :))

Willie,
Excellent entry for the share a story in a poem contest. Your man and his mule, Molly, came to life. I love the hints of dialect throughout. A very satisfying ending, he finally found his missing mule.
Virtual six stars.
