This is a very sad story in a poem. This situation happens so often. I can relate to it so well. No communication. I think this excellent entry should do well in the competition. Good luck. Jen.

Thank you so much, Jen, for sharing my sad story. I am sorry you can relate so well to it. It?s a true story about what happened to a close friend of mine many years ago. Rod

Your poem really touched my heart. Lot of people have asked these same questions. Beautifully written in good meter and rhyme. Good luck in the contest.

A poem with a real life scenario at its core - expressed with candour and honesty - the 'inexplicable' departure of a life partner - lots to ponder here

Thank you so much, zanya, for your high praise of WHY? and those six bright stars. It is a true story about a close friend. I am so pleased you think it was told with candor and honesty as I tried to tell it as truthfully as I could. Rod

You get my last 6 because this poem is excellent in EVERY respect: conveyance of theme, rhyme, meter, smooth flow--all! You have described what actually happens OFTEN. Woman wants out--for whatever reason--and whisks the kids hundreds of miles away. So unfair-shouldn't be allowed.

Thank you so much, Janice, for your enthusiastic response to WHY? and that galaxy of stars. Yes, this is a true story about a close friend who suffered unfairly because his wife literally stole his children and kept them from him for many years. Rod

This is a glimpse into one couple's communication break down. When that happens, the end of the relationship is not far behind.
I do not believe in marriage for a long time, because vowing in church to love forever, sickness and health, blah blah...just does not make human sense.
We change over the years, of course and after say, 20 years, that nervous young groom that you promised your entire life to, is not the same person.
Just my thoughts.
Good one, cheers, judester

Hi judester. I appreciate your sharing my poem and your comments. This is a true story about a close friend who suffered greatly because his wife stole his kids. Fortunately not all long-term marriages end like this. My wife and I will celebrate our 50th anniversary in December. Indeed I?ve changed and so has she, but we?ve succeeded in communicating all these years. Rod

I hate it when I have no sixes to award for a poem that was so perfect in every way, and one that made me feel the pain of this poor man who got a very unexpected "Dear John" letter.
Good luck in the contest! This poem is a winner I'd say

This is a sad, touching poem. Thespeaker is a man whose wife has left him and he still can't figure out why. His pain comes across in the poem which has a ring of sincerity. Well done.

I am so pleased that WHY? has ?a ring of sincerity.? It is a true story about a close friend. Though it happened years ago, he still does not fully understand why she left him.

She has left you, your home, your kids; you thought of her love's betrayal, you prayed to God and sought for His advice, you still love her, she is your sun and the moon; well said, well done.

Thank you for sharing my poem. It is a true story, but not mine. It is based on what happened to a close friend many years ago. Rod

Your poem captures the perplexed incomprehension of having something happen that has not been explained. The narrator has some insight about possibly prioritising work too much, and the young age at marriage may have made his wife feel like she had missed out on something and now wanted her freedom. She didn't do the right thing by him at all. He was owed an explanation (unless he was a wife beater and she ran for her own safety, and he isn't admitting it). But having the kids live 600 miles away is a cruel distance. At least she took the kids and didn't desert them like my mother did to me and 3 sisters when she got bored with her husband and cleared out with no explanation. He came home to find her gone and 4 daughters under 6yrs old to cope with (as the youngest, I was adopted out).

Hi Lisa. Many thanks for taking the time to read and comment about WHY? This story is based on what happened to a close friend of mine many years ago. He never did truly understand why she left him, and he suffered greatly because he could not afford to see his kids very often. Fortunately, he is now able to see his grandchildren. Your story--which you?ve often mentioned--is also poignant. Rod
