Concise and tightly written. This piece paints a picture of your dad and does so with great detail. I felt as if I was there. The flow of language and dialogue worked well. Thanks for sharing.

What love, and kindness you show in this tribute to your father. I truly enjoyed your story, and believe you gave a very good account of his life, and how much you loved, and still love him today. You were blessed for sure, not all children have the good memories you have.

Your ode is very nice about your father and being reared by both parents.
Learning from both on how to deal with situations in life is a blessing.
Good luck with your ode.

A brilliant portrayal of a quiet, powerful and compassionate man. You were indeed priveliged to have had such a man in your life at an impressionable age.

Beautifully written homage to a very important person in your life.
We all could learn from your father. His stoicism and relative quiet from such a humble man is what this country could use right about now.
His measured words or demeanor may not have always been understood or appreciated at the time, but whatever the circumstance, you always new where he stood and what he meant; and that is the true measure of a man.

This is absolutely beautiful and what a wonderful Ode to your father. I had just the opposite, my father was mean, angry and used curse words which made me very upset. Good luck in the contest. Patricia

Thank you. I never once heard my father curse. Not even so much as dammit.

You were lucky to have such a father.

Hi there,
This was a very well written piece.
It hit a lot of touchstones for me too. My Dad was always reading and at home. He encouraged this in me too and is something I pass on to my little one. I only work when she's at school so I am always around.
Great piece and I'll be watching for the booths.

Thanks. It is wonderful that you can be at home for your little one. So many kids today spend most of their time in day-care or with sitters.

I just WISH that I could be a quiet person. like your father.
By reading this, I can feel the love and respect that you had for your father.
People always have more respect for the quiet man.
Very well written with no slow spots in it that I could see.

Thanks. Yes, my father was a good man. He had old-fashioned values. Dad wouldn't buy anything on credit. If he didn't have the money to pay for something he said we didn't need it.

Thank you for your offering, this was enjoyable to read. Your father sounds like he was a really neat guy. Sorry you lost him. Your writing style is engaging and conversational. It's hard to do a lot with 500 words, but this was good. If you had more words to work with, it would have been good to have more detail on one of the scenes you described - getting in trouble, visiting customers, working in the orchard, etc. Liked this.

Thanks. I know, there is a lot more I could say about my father but it was limited on how much I could write. I will most likely write more about him, and my mother, some day soon.
