When things become unbearable and cannot be ignored,
we must reach out for help and keep our faith in the Lord .. amen to this and the author notes.
Good rhyming couplets, Bill. You have really described the horror of depression as only and insider would know it.
Have a good weekend.

You are absolutely right, without faith and hope I would have given up a long time ago, with all the trials in my life. Excellent message and rhyming-hopefully, your poem may lift the spirits of those in need of encouragement. Faye

I am sorry to hear that, Bill. I am fine nowadays, I don't get depressed, but it was tough at the time. Hope you feel better and take care of yourself, too. Faye

Cedar;
+ Near notable alliteration's: /"feel like a fugitive"(Also good source of a simile)/"terrible thoughts"/"curl up in a corner"/
+ Rhyming exceptionally use and are each rhyming word is contingent to the meaning and concept of each line thus making the reading and rhythm flow smoothly and with the rhymes and neither forced nor labored.
+ Rhythmic meter(difference syllable counts per line), timing, cadence and tempo all were helpful in making the reading clear, fluid and easy.
+ Imagery superb and vivid and distinct and very expertly expressive and vividly descriptive: "You curl up in a corner, with a constant urge to cry, feeling so alone and useless that you just to die. Very descriptive, powerful and poignant.
+ Enjambment used where it is the running on every thought and idea from one line or verse to the next without a syntactical break. A good example was the above line used in the imagery.
+ Good luck in the contest and may the good Lord be with you always.

Hi Bill. I know these situations for I have been bipolar since the early seventies and have had this affect my professional as well as my personal life. Now it is not so much of a problem as there are no highs and I can cope with the lows. The answer is that I have never lost my faith in God. Poetry has given me an outlet for my creative energies and when I am on the right side of my muse I fare fairly well. Your poem highlights this apparition and does it with good poetics. Hope that you have avoided any form of depression. Rear Alan

I think most of us do experience spells of depression. It becomes a problem when the state persists, and the person suffering can't explain just why he or she is depressed. Your rhyming couplets are excellent, and you really get inside how someone suffering form chronic depression goes through. People lose the ability to cope. "You feel like a hostage" is an excellent choice. It suggests that once depression has a person in its grip, he is hostage to it and can't get over it. That's why those suffering from depression need to seek help. judi

Your poem is an impactful one about depression, Bill. As you said, we all suffer depression at one time or another. But there are those who are always depressed. It's so very hard to imagine, but I have a friend who suffers, so I have a small understanding.
I like your final stanza, in particular:
"When things become unbearable and cannot be ignored,
we must reach out for help and keep our faith in the Lord."
Well done! This is a great entry for the contest. Best of luck! Alana

Excellent review of what depression entails.
I liked your story, although it was generic.
I would like to hear of possible methods to overcome this state of mind.
Everyone should realize that many people are more lost and depressed than they are. They need to get out among people, even go to the mall, and find the smile of affirmation from someone who also is feeling low, unwanted, not talented, not loved, and not fitting in.
Depression cannot be resolved in a fetal position. If not other people, the search out Nature. You will receive many emotional blessings just by observing the wonders of the world.
Easy to say, as an armchair critic. Yes, but I speak from the loneliness of self doubt, the failure to achieve some of my own goals and standards that I have set for myself. Learning to accept my path in life, and to cast away those who were toxic to me and created negative energy has enriched my path, as I continue.
Try the mantra of the unknown sage:
Weep not for what you have lost, fight for what you have
Weep not for what is dead, fight for what was born in you
Weep not for the one who abandoned you, fight for who is with you
Weep not for those who hate you, fight for those who want you
Weep not for your past, fight for your present struggle
Weep not for your suffering, fight for your happiness
With things that are happening to us, we begin to learn that nothing is impossible to solve,
just move forward

Thank you for your very informative review my friend, I appreciate it. I wish I had the knowledge to advise you on different methods to overcome this dreadful disease. However, there is no permanent solution that I'm aware of. Sure, there are a variety of medications available, but they only mask the problem. It's like taking Advil for a headache, it always comes back. I've been fighting this monster since the day I was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, over 22 years ago. I wish you the best in your endeavors throughout the course of life my friend. Take care of yourself. Bill

Depression is a state of mind, but it can also have to do with chemicals changes in the body as well. You're right when you say that everyone is depressed once and awhile. This was a well written poetic voice that flows well... John

Hello Linda. Thanks girl for that wonderful review and rating, I really appreciate it. When I saw the contest prompt to write a poem about depression, I had to join in. I've been fighting that monster since the day I was diagnosed with a form of muscular dystrophy (MG) 22 years ago. If it spreads to your lungs, it can kill you. So the first few years was really rough, but as time goes by now, I hardly think about that part of it. Enough of that, how are you doing? Any health problems? I sure hope not. Take care my friend and have a great weekend. Bill
