'Tis not the Bard, but pretty good poetry anyway

Hi Carolyn,

Your poem, "Wonders of Winter" is written very well in Free Verse for the poetry contest. I love the title of it. Is there a difference in Free Verse and Free Style? I can't remember ever writing one although I keep thinking I should try my hand at it. I had such fun today watching my sweet little guy, Dylan. I might be watching him again on Sunday. I hope I will as I rarely see him anymore.

    Thanks Kat,
So glad you liked this one. I took the street scene pic from my front window.
Say hello to Dylan from his #1 fan...
    Love, Carolyn

When I see Dylan again, who knows when, I'll tell him you're still his fan. No one brought Dylan to me on the day I was supposed to watch him. No called me about him so I don't know what happened. I hope he wasn't sick again and had to go to the hospital.

Dear Kat, I hope the little guy is ok. Maybe they just don't understand how important it is for you to have him now and then. He is a doll and would brighten anyone's day. :-) Carolyn

They know how much I love Dylan and would like to watch him. Both parents work though and someone else was supposed to bring him here and didn't.

Waiting for the children to emerge
** And break upon the drifts
Like playful dolphins * *
* In the sea
I love that imagery....as they dive in and out of snow drifts
Well penned
God bless

I know that winter is very lovely to look at, but I am still not very fond of it! Lovely imagery and choice of descriptive words to convey your thoughts. Great picture and good luck in the contest. Faye

Hi Carolyn. I like your free verse poem. Children love winter and playing in the snow. I love the picture you make of houses sheathed in snow, and the quiet solitude of early morning. Lovely. :>D Miss Sally

    Thank you Miss Sally,
I am so pleased you enjoyed this poem. It was interesting to write as free verse is not my usual form.

Everyone can't help loving winter despite the cold but if winter come can spring be far behind? Not let's get technical. I challenge you to write your very pleasing poem, cutting out all adjectives and adverbs. You will find that your images will be more expressive because those redundant words are not paying their dues. Best wishes. -EKim777

This is a nicely done free verse. I agree that free verse is sometimes the most freeing of all poetry forms. I also think it is clearer many times than is forced rhyming and strict meter. Good luck in the contest, Patricia

    Hi there Patricia,
Thanks for the great thoughts on free verse. I sometimes work into a short story when actually it could be this form. I appreciate the good wishes.

The imagery in this is stunning and meets the contest requirements beautifully. One little question - should "quite" be "quiet"? It is the only place I stumbled a little as otherwise it is an inspiring and peaceful read throughout. I wish you all the best in the judging and thank you so much for sharing this with me.

    Hi there,
You are right. I changed the word, sometimes the computer provides and it not the word called for. So glad you liked this one.

I totally agree with the author in this piece of work. Winter can create such wonderful scenes if you can weather the storm. I believe that the most inhospitable landscapes are the most beautiful. Beauty and danger seem to be bed fellows. Just as they say: "Every rose has it's thorn."

you've taken the reader to an early snowy morning.
I remember them well. By lunchtime almost every
house had a visitor in the front yard, a snowman.

Yes, that is exactly how this particular day went. Kids out of school and the snowmen come visiting. I liked that....
