This is a great essay, John. You've rekindled so many memories of these life-changing events. Yes, some sad, but the lunar walk and "Miracle on Ice" were two things that captivated the country as well. It's funny how many memories (like what I had for breakfast) just slips away, but I can tell you what I was wearing, who my teacher was, what we did, and what we said when Kennedy was assassinated. Same thing with the other things you listed. You did however forget one major event that I'll never forget...1969 when Broadway Joe and the underdog NY Jets beat the Baltimore Colts in one of the biggest upsets ever. hehehe
Deserving of a six and I keep thinking of more things.

Hello jmdg1954,

Reminiscences of significant days all of us can identify with. As for 911, I was still asleep on the West Coast. The first plane hit the Towers at 846 ET. Neil Armstrong's steps on the moon were heard on the car radio in Bunk's Drive-in in Bellingham, Washington as I took my lunch hour in very late afternoon. Kennedy's assassination found me sitting in speech class my junior year in high school. He died at about 11AM PT. We were in a daze. Most teachers let us talk quietly. Only our trigonometry teacher tried to teach class. Nobody paid any attention to him.

Wow, you have an incredible recollection of the events I wrote about. Unfortunate that we are able to remember the details of certain events and not others. Thanks for reading and I do appreciate your commentary. John

It is a good story. I remember all of these events but mostly the moon walk as it happened on my 20th birthday. I am Canadian so I felt the other tragedies but not as closely as Americans so close to the events. I saw no editing needed. Great job.

What an interesting concept for an essay, and how vivid your memories when all these events took place. Even at a young age, some events stay imprinted on our minds. I was a little older than you, yet remember exactly what I was doing when I heard about John F Kennedy (even here in Autralia, it left an impact on me). I also remember where I was for the other three events, as they too, had a global impact. Thanks for sharing and warmest regards, Marijke

Marijke, sorry it took so long to say thank you, but working 3 jobs, 7 days a week leaves me little time for FS. Thank you for reading and for thinking back and commenting. John

I was only three when President Kennedy was killed, I really don't remember it. Through your excellent writing I was able to relive all those memorable times. I also remember the terrible Oklahoma City bombing. I was really scared on that one when we all found out it was a home grown terrorist. That scares me worse than 9/11. Thank you so much for sharing your work, Shirley

Thank you for sharing this with us. I also remember the death of Princess Di and how sad I felt even though I was not a DI follower, the OKC bombing and the lost babies, and of course 9/11.

Kelly, I to remember Princess Di, with great accuracy. Amazing how the mind works, I don't recall what I had for dinner three days ago, but recall specific events in years (many years) past. Thank you for reading and reviewing my work, I appreciate it very much. John

Unfortunately due to my age I can only recollect where I was on a few of these events. Your recollections were very well written and very descriptive. I enjoyed reading your memories and could actually picture your state of mind due to having certain memories of those events in common. Thank you for posting this. And you are so correct in observation that it is all to seldom that the "Happy Events" seldom make the list.
