This is a very well written free verse poem you have penned for the contest. I love Cocoa Puffs too! Especially when the chocolate is there to drink after the cereal is gone. Best wishes in the contest. Teri

That was a lovely story, with some great imagery to put us in the picture. I can imagine a child never having ceriel before, would love cocao puffs. I do, and I can understand his delight at having chocolate for breakfast! Lol. Well done, this was a lovely free verse poem. Good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx

What a wonderful memory. I cannot recall exactly when I had my first bowl of cereal. I do recall that it was absolutely wonderful. Unless I am mistaken, I believe my first bowl was Kellogg's Frosted Flakes. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I can still dimly recall the sweet taste.

I really enjoyed the story as well as the level of detail you provide. I am transported to another time and place. Amazing poem! Free verse often is just prose in poetry form, but this definitely flows like poetry!

What a snapshot of changing life! Indeed, to a young lad~ dealing with such incredible cultural changes, wouldn't it be just so oddly wonderful that chocolate is now a breakfast food? It's a fine free verse filled with a bouquet of emotions... A bit of the unknown, a bit of loss and gain and looking ahead ~ and this charming moment of sweet bliss with this Grandpa who is quietly assuming the role of the "Da" just passed...

Your poem made me smile and feel a little sad at the same time. We as a nation have lost the value of a healthy breakfast. We traded it for puffs and chocolate milk. You did a great job of describing the change in lifestyles.

Thank you for letting me into this boys transition from rural farm life in Ireland to American life. I can imagine his delight with this new cereal and I saw them both drinking up the last bit of chocolate milk.
Thanks for offering this delicious poem.

I really did enjoy this poem. You made wonderful description of the land you came from, as well as your first day in the new land. Your imagery of sight and smell made this outstanding for me, as well as your conclusion.

This free verse, Cocoa Puffs, pinpoints that moment when an Irish boy, moved from what he knew to what would become home, as Grandpa smooths the transition with chocolate for breakfast. Neat.
