This is so creative and ingenious. You took the writing prompt and made the entry as a funeral worker who describes her job and explains her own spirituality in working with the dead.
Beautiful job - a virtual 10 star.
Best wishes,
Mary

Thank you for this lovely review!

It's certainly an interesting angle and insight as to how it might be to work as a funeral director, assisting in bidding farewell to loved ones - and the spiritual reflexion that it may engender

Your contest entry is expertly written, Yvonne. From the picture to the last word, it covers the job well. The spirituality is evident, but not in your face. You handled the prompt well. Your words were well thought out, they were descriptive, and allowed readers to follow the storyline with ease. I agree with your comments about how one could perform a job such as this without believing in a higher power--God. The care your worker took on preparing the deceased was well expressed.
Thank you for sharing.
Best wishes in the contest.
Respectfully, Jan

Good luck wishes for the Jobs, People & Spiritualism, damommy. This was absolutely great. It definitely showed that people did indeed find the funeral business spiritual. The picture was so very appropriate. Very well done and greatly enjoyed.

Hello Yvonne,
What a great piece for this contest. Your imagination is fantastic. I was starting to wonder if this was non-fiction, you told the tale so realistically. It would indeed be satisfying to give the families of the deceased the best parting gift they could have, a last look at their loved one, taken care of by one who really cares. I loved that you spoke to the deceased as though they were still here, giving them that last bit of dignity. Well done gal.
Have a blessed day.

Yvonne,
Certainly! I get it. I have been to a variety of funeral homes and there can be a distinct difference in the way things are handled. From the way the deceased person is prepared and 'displayed', to the ceremonies and 'extras', to the way the actual employees treat their guests. Sometimes my experiences have actually been a bit ... frightening. If they have treated ME the way they have - just an ordinary guest - how are they treating the people who COUNT?
We have a parlor here. A 'mom and pop' place. They are AMAZING! You look better in death than in life! These guys (yes, guys!) should be in Hollywood doing makeup for stars. hahahaha The place is on the small side, but their care and concern is so clear in everything they do. Anyway - so sorry to get off on that. It's just that they are really THAT CRAZZY AMMAAZZING. *smile*
I appreciated the fact that this lady chose this as her job. It is not a popular one, probably. I don't see a lot of people going to college and choosing this in their Freshman year, right? (BTW, in one of the novels I am currently in the middle of, my male MC is a funeral home owner.)
I thought you did a super job getting inside this girl's head, too. Into her motivations and reasonings. It's clear she didn't just jump straight into DEAD BODY CITY! It was a gradual thing and she grew to love and appreciate the position and honor more and more. Nice.
I do (of course) have some notes - which you are welcome to use or ignore:
1.) You may think I'm crazy, but I (talk) to them and bid them good night at the end of the work day when I (have) to close the caskets for the night.
--> IF she still has the job and is still doing this? (Since you open the piece with her saying she HAS the job, I'm assuming she is still in the position and happy there, right?) So, same with the following:
2.) applying makeup, I (do) my best to make them look like they did in life. (I feel/I feel sure/I'm sure) they would want to look their best even now.
3.) and without knowing they were being sent off by a person who cared.
--> and without caring about the person they are sending off.
--> based on the way this sentence/paragraph starts out. '...how could anyone work this job without...'
--> you need to flip the focus, right?
4.) Of course, we (have) to work with atheists and people of other religions, but that (doesn't) stop me from feeling
Hope this helps! I have no idea how others might come at this, but your entry was highly creative and wholly intriguing. Thanks and good luck!

I think it takes a special kind of person to be a funeral director. They need to be a serious and sympathetic person as well as spiritual. The people they serve are often in a lot of pain and have to be handled by someone who understands what they are going through. I think you did a wonderful job with this story. I enjoyed reading it. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you, Beth. I fudged on the truth. I really had the job.

I'll bet you were perfect for it, but I wouldn't be comfortable with dealing with the bodies before they were embalmed. I remember the movie called My Girl where Jamie Lee Curtis put makeup on the deceased.

Nah, someone has to do it. I wanted to go into forensic sciences as a career. My mother forbid me. I live the fantasy in my blind girl mysteries as Dr. Marie MacLavish. She tenderly cares for the deceased.
Sending you my best today as always and my very best wishes for the upcoming contest,
Sal XOs

As my story said, I had no idea when I applied for the job. I fudged a little saying it's fiction, but, oh, well. It's still not too late for you to do what you wanted. I didn't get into this business until I was going on 60.
Thanks, Sally.

I meant to tell you what a great job you do with forensics in your story. I'm sorry you weren't able to pursue years ago. I've always been fascinated by it, too, and watch almost anything on TV involving forensics.

This is very different for you Yvonne, the theme is very unique and so well done, and it doesn't really challenge one,s belief system either, how anyone can have a belief without an internal confirmation is beyond me, but this is very inventive well done, goodluck blessings Roy
