BN,
Oh, yeah. It's easy to see why this post took top honors. It reads so real and lifelike. You put US in the treestand with that proud and happy dad. We become that torn child. Wanting to please our father and yet so guilty and sad because of our actions.
You used the required words beautifully, sliding them right into the flow of words seamlessly. I'm so glad I got to see this. Thanks and congrats!

This is a really good story. I am a deer hunter, though not as dedicated as I once was in my youth. Every time I have watched them die, it bothers me.

I think it's ok to hunt for food, I'm in Minnesota so it's serious business. But I don't think kids should be made to do it if they don't want to. Thanks so much for reading my poem. :)

Congratulations on your competition win, which surprises me not, given that the poem is not only beautifully written but also filled with so much emotion. I empathize with your narrator's voice. I could never be a hunter.

A wonderful piece filled with descriptive imagery and a captivating tale of connection but also regret.
Each line adds more to the complexity of the story as we grow to know how close and yet so far these people are.
Wonderful work!

What a powerful poem written to tell quite the story. I could feel what that child was feeling from your words. Marvelous indeed! You should be proud. Six stars

This would be hard on a child. I am not sure how people can kill an animal. However, it has been going on since the beginning of time. For one, they have to be controlled to keep people driving in vehicles on the roads from fatal accidents. Thank you for the great post. It is heartfelt.

Yes, we also had girls in our family but fortunately, my husband went hunting with his buddies. And, also fortunately, he was a terrible shot. He only ever shot pheasant and a bear (we ate on the hind quarters for two years). I was sick of eating bear meat. Then when he turned maybe 50, he had a change of heart and said he wanted to just admire such lovely creatures. . .we could be happy and healthy eating fish he'd caught. Worked for me. :) Great poem, so happy it was recognized for you.

I've had bear meat, although I certainly didn't know it at the time! My sister made hamburger helper with it and told me after. It had a very sweet taste I thought. Thank you for this thoughtful review. :)

You have composed a nice poem using the prompt perfectly, telling a story about hunt, spreading scent of guilt, promoting a moral message, expressing a high concern about killing animals; well said, well done; enjoyed the read; thank you for sharing this; keep writing. ALCREATOR

Good presentation. The theme is deep. Seems as if it was you. I would feel the exact same. And I am a meat eater. Congrats on winning the contest. Looking forward to more of your work.

A powerful use of memories of a childhood incident to convey a message.
Your poem tells its story in excellent rhymed and metered verse and what is striking is the realism - the long walk in the cold, the wait in the stand, the dread before the deer's death and the horror after. All ring true.
I've seen this theme before - that the killing is never right - and this is as potent as any.
