What an awesome, though terribly sad, story, Gretchen.
You did a great job with your poignant story. I could feel
Grandfather's love of Freida and his sadness of her being
gone. You did a great job showing the effects of time on
his mind. I loved the way the Freida was described by him
with the description of the teacup.

A very poignant and meaningful story filled with emotion. Dementia is cruel and you have highlighted the vagaries of this disease as well. Reality and memory intertwining. Well written.

This was a lovely reminiscence. Even though a story, I am sure it speaks of many cases of folks who lost loved ones in that awful time of atrocities. Well done. So many are trying to obliterate this awful time, claiming it never happened. I pray we can keep the history intact for future generations. So glad you won the contest.

Beautiful! Heartfelt and sad. The story took on another meaning when the concentration camp was mentioned. I instantly knew their background and what pain he must have felt when she didn't make it out. This is perfect, and I can see why it won, Gretchen!

As touching as the grandfather's story is, more touching is the love and patience the grandson has for his grandfather. I know what it's like taking care of someone who tells the same thing a hundred times.
