What a lovely innovate take on a job, Steve. It's easy to see why this one was a winner. Glad I took some time to back in your portfolio to have a look. I'll try to get to a couple more in the next while.
Just one suggestion:
Once I stood tall and splendid (consider changing to:)
I Once stood tall and splendid (for better iambic flow)

Thanks, Rose.
Hacked out in a hurry to make the contest deadline! Good spot for that line - I will make the change.
Nearly all of my children's pieces are now in the FS book 'Steve's Poems for Kids'. I surprised myself to find how many there were and reminded myself of some stuff I had written!

Many kudos on your well-deserved win. I enjoyed your rhymed couplets in these humorous, rhythmic quatrains plus your descriptive storytelling and use of alliteration. Thank you for sharing your cute granddaughter and her pal too. Here's to scarecrows! Cheers- Joan

A scarecrow brought to life through personification, some great words, rhythm, and rhyme. What a life, what a work ethic, Shelly has. I feel I know him. Very enjoyable read, even better aloud. You have a winner here, no doubt. Kenny

Well written and so much fun to read. Love the photo, that's one adorable granddaughter you have. :) Wonderful imagery with the patched up pastel britches and the stitches in the britches. Excellent entry in the contest. Best wishes in the voting booth!

The return of Shelley Scarecrow turns out to be a really cool poem. In its seven stanza of rhyming couplets we get the rise and fall and rise of one of our under-appreciated heroes.

This is excellent. I love it. It takes a litte different approach to the prompt than most and that's good. I think it's worth six stars but I don't have them left.

What a precious poem and so well done. Extremely clever to use the job of a scarecrow rather than a job of a human. Your poem was easy to read and flowed nicely for me. I am not a poet so can only judge content and how it sounded when I read it aloud. Good job. Luck in the contest.

and an important job it is for shelley the scarecrow. Great fun poem for the prompt. Too bad shelley had to stay out all winter, cold and alone though. Good luck to you.

Thanks, Teresa.
We had about a month of storms and felt pretty guilty every time we saw poor old Shelley face down in the mud, but it really wouldn't have been worthwhile resurrecting her till the weather improved.
