Hi JMDG,
I like your first-person point of view and your imaginary passenger.
Tuesday of last week when I was off from work, the DTE light came on after I started my car. My car is (was) parked in my driveway which has a moderate downward slope. ( You're in past tense, so your car 'was' parked in the driveway, but the moderate slope is present tense, too. Changing the tense in the middle of a sentence is appropriate if you're speaking of a past tense event and then a present tense event in the same sentence.)
roads (road's) overpass
Your ending made me laugh. Here you go again. Maybe tomorrow.

Fortunately, this has never happened to me. I don't even know if my 2012 Rav 4 has a DTE light.
Many years ago when my daughter was a young driver, she ran out of gas and called me. I had to BUY a container, fill it with gas and take it to her.
This was a funny story, but I'm guessing this will never happen to you again.

This was a well written interesting story. I've nearly been there. Closest I've had to do is call my insurance to bring me gas at home. They came with a red container. I was not proud.
Best wishes, Alex

Back in the days when fuel prices were not so high, I used to carry a spare can in the boot for just such occasions. These days I can barely afford to put juice in the tank let alone have a maybe baby in the boot.
So I just have to watch that fuel gauge and hope it doesn't flash when the bank account is feeling the moths closing in on the empty spaces within.

This happened to me once when I was a kid. In those days, they had no warning lights. Luckily I was just across the street from a gas station, but all I had was an empty wine bottle in the trunk. The gas attendant, after a short argument, let me fill the wine bottle with enough gas to get back to the station. Not exactly legal, but what can you do. When you are a kid, you learn from experience. estory

Sometimes we all just kind of push things too far. One time in 70 years speaks highly of your regular habits of taking care of what needs to be done. Fun read. Thanks for sharing.

John, I found out 50 years ago that when you run out of gas once, you never do it again. The moment my light comes on, I begin looking for a gas station. Or I ask my car to find one for me, which it is always happy to do:-)
Another day in the life, right? At least it's amusing.
BTW, I was waiting for your invisible passenger to tell you how dopey you were.

Actually, I didn't need the invisible passenger for that, I had a Mrs to do that.
Haha

Yes, it's a good idea to pay attention to the warnings. You write about what many people do daily- ignore the warnings. Fortunately you were close to home, but it can be an embarrassing experience.

This is very amusing, especially your determination to put it off until tomorrow. You got four tomorrows out of it, that's pretty good, but then you had to walk. I hope you had a car at home to go get the gas. My symbols said my right rear tire air was low, so I took it in and had the tires rotated. My right rear tire is still low. Who says our cars are smarter than us!
