It's wonderful that you still carry those happy times along with you. You always take me back to fond memories of my own. Times sure have changed and people look at things a lot differently, including me. At 4-years-old, the men used to take me to Jones's Bar and Restaurant and we sit there all day, me drinking beer from a shot glass. It may have mostly been foam, but by days end I would come home snockered, feeling just like one of the boys. :-) Thanks for sharing.

I never did anything like the traveling you did. I am enjoying vicariously through your stories. Keep them coming. Sometimes you will talk about a rule or something and I will be reminded of a memory I had tucked away and forgotten. These stories are fascinating. Gretchen

I think I would've been frustrated as well if the only films being shown were westerns and war films, they're not the sort of films I enjoy at all. Another well written piece, Beth, I enjoyed reading it.

What a memorable summer that was for you! And you were at some of the places we had visited since we lived in Houston for six years. What an eye-opener for you and yet God allowed you to meet two people you knew from grade school in Newton!!

I don't want your summer vacation to end. I'm really enjoying reading it. It is fun and you've had a lot of firsts. Thank you for sharing these memoirs with us.

It sounds very much like you had a very interesting summer of 1953. In 1953. I began myself more in high school so I'm assuming that that's about where you were at that time. Have a good day and may God bless you. Patricia.

Seems to be a summer to remember, and remember you have. So many kinfolk. So different than my family but with six kids visiting was a challenge even with a 55 Chevy SW with the third seat which was hogged by the two youngest girls.

You're really getting around Beth, it was funny back then, a lot of the extra youth that you may meet was through parent's friends or relatives, there was very few girls hung around with the young males such as me at the time, well done Beth, I love your biographical works, well done, blessings Roy

Thank you, Chuck. I did like Texas, and I got to see quite a bit of it. The only thing I don't like is the part around Abilene and the northwestern corner. Five of mother half-sibling moved to Texas. The petroleum refining industry offered good paying jobs. Now Texas is full of people related to me, most of whom I've never met.

So many relatives to visit! Sounds like you had some amazing experiences that summer, with everybody wanting to welcome you and offer a good time.
Wendy
Edit: with it(s) street-lined palms (palm-lined streets)
seemed to come too quickly in spite (of) the fact six weeks ...
