The love for horses can be a busy trainer's life. I recently wrote a story about what goes on in a cowboy's life daily. The horses are about the same; they need training like we do, and it's usually daily, too. Like your story. It shows us that even if we think we know the person, we really don't.

Yes, it is so easy to "...put people into small frames of our choice and believe they live there- and only there- forever." I am happy that you learned from your friend again -- he left a wonderful legacy in that, I think...

Charlie sounds like quite the guy, teaching algebra and being so involved with horses. It is sad that he died from Covid. Excellent story here that held my interest and the reader does get to know Charlie here from your story.

This is a well-executed non-fiction story for the contest. I particularly liked the introduction of covid into the story almost a an aside, it is very telling of how we now live with this scourge abd just hate it. The second thing I loved was the last line. The fact that Charlie was your life-long teacher is great?. The part I would have liked to see developed more in the actual story was how little you actually knew each other when young. This is enigmatic - too much so.

Thank you so much. It amazes me how little I knew about my fellow classmates. We grew up in Tioga, La. a tiny little town and all attended the same school for 12 years. Yet in my graduating class of 97, I have determined there was a great deal I didn't know about my classmates. How does one live a solitary life in such a small town. Maybe that will be my next story. lol Thanks for reading and commenting.

This is an interesting story about Charlie, that has great commentary at the end. We only know one facet of a person. When I went to my father's funeral, there were many people there who said he helped them start and maintain inner city community vegetable gardens. What?
