The talkin' heads clamor
to enlighten me today
but I'm waitin'
to hear the unspun truth
from a voice
that's raw and real.
So, pierce my heart
the way I pierce yours
and drop me to my knees.
But most of all
watch for me
as I stumble
through dead dreams.
Refrain:
Let the guy behind me smilin'
be my angel for today
and the sunlight streamin'
send the demons far away.
Cages full of men
whose fathers fed them stone
and women who drown'd their babies
just 'cause they're told.
But in the countin' sheds
all that's hidden will be known.
An old man dyin' prays
he wasn't wrong in his believin'
and his fear won't let him say
he hopes he finds the way
to the maker of the dance
and the holder of the key.
Refrain:
Let the guy behind me smilin'
be my angel for today
and the sunlight streamin'
send the demons far away.
Let your blessin' rain
drown the chokin' weeds.
Send a sign
this trav'ler will heed.
Be it a note that's sung
or a whisper
at the bottom of a wind -
long as I know it's real.
Refrain:
Let the guy behind me smilin'
be my angel for today
and the sunlight streamin'
send the demons far away.

Author Notes
I was inspired to write this by the smile of a stranger in my rear-view mirror - he lifted my heart and I smiled, too.
This song references Matthew 7:9 "Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?"
My first attempt at song-writing. Minimal punctuation intentional.
