Whatever happened? Making our way home
for Christmas was so often a major festive event.
The occasion, once a year, brought families and
friends gathered for much merriment.
Children listened to bright holiday music,
There was laughter and hugs and great anticipation.
Each one catching up on new stories and well-worn tales
as everyone ate, drank, and was merry,
and my, oh my, if there was mistletoe
hung over the door, watch out ... a smooch was
certainly, safe and a given.
But now families have grown and have children
of their own, and miles and miles separate the
hearths in homes, and our days of flying have
turned to the Zoom room and the retirement
center dining room ...
where we are nestled safely in our home,
on this occasion this year,
is not where our hearts are
for now, all our children and grandchildren
live away and so far, and they took away my car.
