A Rondeau for Potlatch Poetry

For Just One Day

by damommy

For just one day, I’d like to fly
with eagles ‘cross a golden sky,
a silhouette on setting sun,
back to my nest when I was done
to watch the swallows swooping by.

On pirate ships, with glass I’d spy
an isle where chests of treasures lie,
and give it all to those with none
. . . for just one day.

At eventide, I’d hear the cry
of whippoorwills’ sweet lullabye.
The time’d seem short, hardly begun,
before the sands of time had run.
All this I wish before I die
. . . for just one day.

A Rondeau is a French form, 15 lines long, consisting of three stanzas: a quintet, a quatrain, and a sestet with a rhyme scheme as follows: aabba aabR aabbaR. Lines 9 and 15 are short - a refrain (R) consisting of a phrase taken from line one. The other lines are longer (but all of the same metrical length).
