A Sevenelle for the Potlatch Challenge

The Ritual

by June Sargent

She built a castle in the clouds,
away from prying eyes and crowds,
where once a year she'd wear her gown
and place upon her head the crown
that now has turned a tarnished brown.
Behind those eyes of sapphire blue
were depths of pain that no one knew.

The only day throughout the year
her eyes won't shed a single tear,
she'd dance from dawn until moonrise
amidst the crickets and fireflies,
near bullfrogs with their mating cries.
Behind those eyes of sapphire blue
were depths of pain that no one knew.

Her carriage she awaits once more
to bring her to the chapel door.
But as the hours drift slowly by,
she drops her flowers with a sigh,
as stars light up the midnight sky.
Behind those sapphire eyes of blue
were depths of pain that no one knew.

She packs away her gown with care
and picks the flowers from her hair.
She's sure he'd only been delayed.
No need to fret or be afraid.
True love would ne'er be betrayed.
Behind those sapphire eyes of blue
were depths of pain that no one knew.
