A chapter in the book The Heart of Poetry

Saga of Sam

by Carolyn 'Deaton' Stephens

Saga of Sam

The desert lay bare and flat as a pan
Except for the distant silhouette of a man
He stumbled on in the raging sun
Trying to out-run the things he had done

He had no intent of taking her life
But nonetheless, Sam shot his wife
He had found her in the arms of a stranger
Shot them both out of passion and anger

Why did she do it, why did she stray
Sam had told her he would return one day
But she'd been told he was lost at sea
She'd waited for him ten years faithfully

How could she know he was touring the world
Sam never wrote to his heart broken girl
Just took for granted she'd always be there
Would never accept other love, she'd not dare

But Sam waited too long and came back too late
He found them together, she and her mate
Killed them dead he did, in a fit of rage
Now dying lay he, by a scruffy old sage

No water to quench his hell bent tongue
No cool air to breath into his parched lung
The posse drew closer, but they were too late
Sam wouldn't hang , sometimes justice can't wait
