Footsteps in the Snow

by jmdg1954

"Be home soon. I'm gonna rock your wor..." CLICK! The phone went dead. The kitchen, total darkness. The house, total silence.

Her hands trembled. The news of an escaped murderer weighed on her mind.

The grandfather clock echoed in the soundless home, bong!... bong!

Startled, she dropped the phone. "Get the light switch." Nothing. "God, hurry home!"

Her eyes looked out the sliding glass doors to the backyard. "Oh my God!"

He stood in the snow. A lecherous gleam with an edentulous smile stared at her.

  "No!"

He fit the profile. He inched closer.

She took her eyes away from the man when Whiskers, her cat pawed the door. "Meow," meant breakfast.

   She gasped her last breath.

   No footprints in the snow.

   Just his reflection!
