The very first day I held you, I whispered in your ear.
"I promise to love you no matter what. To take away your fear."
I did the best I could, with whatever means I had.
I was both your mother and your father, I was all that you had.
"I promise to keep you safe, and be the best mom I can be."
I helped you with your school work, and getting that first job.
I stood there at your wedding and tried hard not to cry.
You looked so very young just then, not ready for the vow.
I should have known you'd make me proud and understand it's meaning.
So when you joined the Army, my heart swelled up ten times.
You stand for freedom, peace and God. But you're still my little boy.
I just pray to God to keep you safe, since I can't do it now.
Across the seas, the miles of sand, you stand for what is right.
Just know that God is there and has you in his sight.
