A cowboy tale
Jerry Jing-Jang Comes to Town
by Cindy Warren
Of all the cowboys in the west,
Jerry Jing-Jang was the best. Smarter by far than all the rest, With horse and rope he passed the test. At the rodeo or on the trail Jerry Jing-Jang didn't fail. One day some outlaws came to town; They came to hunt Jerry Jing-Jang down. 'Cause they couldn't rustle, couldn't rob With Jerry Jing-Jang on the job. The sheriff and deputy could not be found In the dusty street there was not a sound; When the outlaws burst thru the tavern door, "Where's that cowboy we're looking for?" Out the back did the barkeep scoot Leaving the outlaws to drink and loot. He found the cowboy at the jail Each looking for the sheriff who'd turned tail. Tho brave Jerry Jing-Jang never runs He'd need his brains before his guns. He knew the outlaws wouldn't fight fair; Still, to face them our hero must dare. He let them drink plenty of beer, Knowing they'd come out to the tavern's rear To that little house with a hole in the seat Where he'd rope them right off of their feet! Jerry Jing-Jang waited behind the trees With a collie named Roundup at his knees, Till an outlaw staggered out into the night And the cowboy's lasso wrapped him up tight. Jerry Jing-Jang didn't wait too long For the others to come and see what was wrong. Guns drawn and looking for trouble They saw their buddy and came on the double. Outlaws who have been drinking beer Don't always manage to think very clear. Brash and bold, they learned too late, Their hog-tied buddy, of course, was bait. The cowboy's traps held them tight, And the bad guys gave up without a fight. Dog and cowboy herded them off to jail, Where you can bet they never made bail. The sheriff spun a tale of how bravely he'd fought, How he and the deputy the outlaws had caught. But the townfolk all knew who'd saved the day; Jerry Jing-Jang had earned that sheriff's pay! |

When I was little, my Dad told me stories of his adventures as the cowboy, Jerry Jing-Jang. At the time I totally believed him. My Jerry Jing-Jang stories are for him.
