Silly Poem about Aging

Check Engine Light

by Cecilia A Heiskary

I woke up one morning and found I was broke
My whole body hurt like never before, was it a joke?
I laid there a minute trying to catch my breath
What was going on I thought it might be death

No one told me I would feel like this
The fact that I was old I tried to dismiss
My back, neck, and feet tried to betray me
My knees were wobbly, how could that be?

The check engine light came on at fifty and only got worse
Aches and pains all over made me want to curse
I played hard and now I was paying
It made me think my body was betraying

Each year that went by it never turned off
The pee ran down my leg when I would cough
The mind plays tricks and I've become forgetful
I'd fried my brain when younger and now I feel dreadful

I'm sixty-two now and the light is still on
My body and I think it's a con
All I can do is keep chugging along
What doesn't kill me makes me strong

This is a silly poem about getting old. One of my favorite sayings is my check engine light came on and never shut off. Nicki B my friend this is for you, thanks for saying that phrase would make a good poem
