A thoughtful suggestion

Sharing during the holidays

by Jesse James Doty

There are many of those among us who are poor and feel ashamed they can’t give presents to their loved ones.

The holiday season works on the heart of so many thinking they have to buy store-bought items.

When in actuality, they can make gifts from home, such as homemade cookies or pies. Handmade gifts are also a premium when it comes to giving to parents by children, even adult children.

The point is, those who are struggling financially, don’t need to feel guilty because they can’t afford to buy holiday presents.

Share a handwritten poem or story.

If you aren’t artistic and cannot cook, share your love in other ways. Share your gratitude to your loved ones for their hospitality and graciousness in accepting you the way you are.

Volunteering is a good idea. Offer to mow their lawn for several months. Or wash their car. Vacuum their carpets or dust their furniture. Be creative, find something you can do that would be of service to your loved ones.

Relax and enjoy the holidays. Let’s not let money rule the holiday season this year.

I published this in a local newspaper to help so many of us who are poor and cannot afford store-bought gifts.
Thanks for letting me share my ideas for celebrating the holidays.
